Reviews

Tim Kidner I have to admit that 22 Bullets is quite a bit more violent than I'm comfortable with; bursts, yes but this revenge thriller starring the venerable Jean Reno is fairly constant, unrelenting and rather ugly.Yes, it's certificate 18 and is about mobsters, current and ex, slaughtering each other, so I shouldn't be surprised and of course, I could have turned it off. But, it's quite a good movie, quite a long one at a whisker under two hours and so I stuck it out. My three stars is not altered by feelings on this aspect.Reno, as Charly Mattei is reliably grizzled and back in his native language, does not suffer the stumbling block he had with the English language that he did when he made films in the U.S. Here, he's natural and believable - not exactly likable but it's impossible not to side with him when he stalks his enemies. There's a pretty high body count, accompanied by some very realistic looking wounds, that really aren't very attractive to look at! The make-up department did well, here. The music has a big part to play in creating the tone, often thunderous and pounding and along with often frenetic camera-work, the film's undeniably jolting and exciting, though those prone to suffering one may well get a migraine as bad as the one that one of the mobsters did. There are a good number of reviews for this title that outline plot details. I'm going to leave that out - people don't need to read that over again. All in all, it's a solid movie on a familiar theme, quite involved with some exciting action and stunts. Reno is very good, as all the actors are. If you like your thrillers full-blood and graphically violent, then this could well be an excellent rental or DVD purchase. Me - it's not my favourite and will leave it at that.
SnakesOnAnAfricanPlain I've read many plot synopsis' for this film, and not one seems to be correct. The glaring omission of how this story really kicks off, changes its point entirely. Jean Reno does not go out on a rampage of revenge after being shot 22 times. In fact, he discovers who was behind it and then leaves it at that. He is a retired gangster and a man perfectly happy to forgive. This film isn't just about revenge, but also pride, honor, and how crime never lets go. Reno was sucked into this world of crime after committing one hit out of revenge. He hasn't been allowed to quit since. It's only later, after the grisly murder of a friend, that the revenge part kicks off. What I like about Reno's revenge is that he takes his time. In Faster, The Rock just shoots people. Here, Reno tells them he is coming, and makes them sweat it out. The second half turns ALL action. It's more like a Bourne film than gangster film. The action scenes are excellent, even if Reno's morality speeches are often contradictory and unnecessary. A film that mostly deals with revenge in a mature fashion, showing the cyclical nature of vengeance.
iKickstand Cliché'd, slowly paced and terribly inaccurate firearm behaviour goofs. I'm all for purposeful silliness but when this is tries to be a "Bourne" film at the same time as a man surviving 22 close range bullet wounds without any serious injuries, as well as using the usual wooden doors for cover later on - that gets to me. Suffers from dumb-mobsters syndrome too. Plot and acting was just enough to stop me from getting too bored before the end. Not a badly made film if you are looking for a run-of-the-mill revenge movie but if you have watched any number of movies in this genre before, this will seem very familiar with not much originality to offer. See "Man on fire" (2004) for a great alternative.
jotix100 Charley Mattei, a retired gangster from Marseilles, lives in a serene setting outside the city. Unfortunately for him, he must go, from time to time, to the old turf, now ruled by Tony Zacchia, a criminal that has sworn to eliminate Charley. Taking his young son, Anatole, for a ride into Marseilles, he lets the boy get out of the car to watch some street performers while he goes to park. In the underground garage, Charley is surprised by a gang that has come to take him out. He receives twenty two bullets in his body, but he is able to survive. The story goes back to three friends that swore to be friends forever. Charley and Tony Zacchia went to the wrong side of the law pursuing a career in violent crimes. Martin, the remaining friend, has gone to be a lawyer. Now bitter enemies, Charley and Tony are at opposite ends. After Charley is released from the hospital, he embarks in a dangerous course of revenge, taking care of the people that tried to kill him.Richard Berry, the French actor, has directed a few films. In this feature he also collaborated in the screenplay, which is based on a novel by Franz-Olivier Giesbert, we have not read. The premise of the film is something that is beyond imaginable. Imagine receiving, at close range, twenty two bullets in your body, and surviving the experience. Well, of course, only in movies and fiction, something like this could happen. In spite of the preposterous scenario, the film is not without its merits. The French title implies immortality, something that Charley possesses. Fans of the genre can rejoice at the way Mr. Berry staged the action. The scenic city of Marseilles is shown in all its beauty. The bigger than life Charley Mattei is played by Jean Reno, who has enjoyed a long career in the French cinema portraying guys like this man. Kad Merad is seen as Tony Zacchia, the friend turned bitter foe. Jean-Pierre Darroussin appears as Martin, a childhood friend who might not be really who he is supposed to be. Marina Fois plays Marie Goldman, a police detective mourning the loss of her husband to the mafia wars.
