Theo Robertson While I was watching A FAIRYTALE OF FORGOTTEN THINGS I wasn't entirely sure what it was about and long after it was finished I was still none the wiser as to what it might have been about . Bob speculates that it might be about " the past being another country " but i'm not so sure It could be about childhood subconscious memories , or regrettably it could also be about paedophillia . I'm sorry if i'm reading too much into this but the story concerns a man creeping into a young child's bedroom late at night and leaving gifts upon the bed . Is this a metaphor for hush money by any chance ? I guess A FAIRYTALE OF FORGOTTEN THINGS is one of these short films that one hundred people can watch and they'd give one hundred different answers as to what the subtext is . From a storytelling point of view this can only be seen as something of a failure
bob the moo When you forget about something it goes to another land. Most of the time it will stay there but sometimes "they" will give it back – but never when you expect it. This is the idea behind this film – a film that strives on the mystery and the questions we have about the concept; needs the mystery so much that the narration is delivered in the breathless whispers of child. In this regard the film works but at some point it has to deliver something or it will end unsatisfactorily. Sadly that happens here – the idea is never explored or taken anywhere and the narration is no help or interest at all. The direction is good and holds the interest but by the end of it you can't help wondering if you have messed up the video and perhaps failed to record the final minutes of this film. Interesting but ultimately hollow.
