cultfilm-89740 Such an amazing film, the dream like nature of the ending. Truly loved it.
r_massey I couldn't make it through the first half of the film.Even after 30 minutes I was wondering whether it was worth carrying on towards the end. With most movies, I'll watch until the end credits roll, even when the film is bad or average, just so I can form a full opinion. With "A Field In England", however, the novelty and enjoyment wears off quite quickly due to the very slow pace and it's hard to see the kind of direction this film wanted to go in. Having turned off the movie halfway through and watched , I had to look up the plot summary to see what I had missed, which, in the end was just a very ambiguous finale.I'm glad I didn't force myself to sit through the whole runtime but also disappointed that I couldn't seem to pluck anymore enjoyment from the film and didn't have reason to watch to the very end.Sure, "A Field In England" may have a hidden subtext or meaning, but it's way too buried for anyone to see and extrapolate how it would come to fruition in a way that's purposeful and makes sense.
George Brooks When I think of British horror movies (made in Britain, produced by British companies etc), the only noteworthy title that springs to mind is The Wicker Man (28 Days Later at a push). I believe this movie, along with Kill List, shall be regarded in the same light as the aforementioned British horror masterpiece in years to come, and here is why. The story follows a squire fleeing from his master and a raging battle during the English civil war. He comes across 3 other men, one of whom mentions an ale house. We then follow these men on their journey to the pub, but not is all as merry as it seems. A meal of psychedelic mushrooms induces a trip in which the men pull a rope, attached to which is a very evil Michael Smiley. This shaman, in the form of Smiley, proceeds to drug the men (with mushrooms and hooch), force feed them runes and make them look for treasure. Some might say that A Field In England shouldn't be classed as a horror. Trust me, if The Silence of The Lambs can be classed as horror this most certainly is a horror film. The scenes in which the force-feeding of pebbles are happening, even though not in shot, are very disturbing. As for the 10 minute psychedelic trip escapade, that not only the characters are taken on, but the viewer as well; It is one of the most insane pieces of cinema I have seen (in a good way, not a Nicholas cage kind of way). I'd compare it to Gaspar Noe's Enter The Void, which also experimented with strobe lighting and camera effects. The sense of dread and tension that is emitted from this scene is enough to make you want to hide, but you can't turn away from the screen, the madness is just too interesting. The reason I believe this film to be so important is purely the way Wheatley takes you on a genre-bending, magic mushroom fuelled, intoxicating and frankly terrifying trip. This along with Smiley's performance and the beautiful cinematography really make this a film I want to recommend to friends. Also the fact it is set in the English civil war, without having to show us any battles or Kevin Costner playing Cromwell is quite cool. Overall I think this was one of the best films of 2013, and if I was a producer, I'd give Wheatley a large budget to make the best horror film since The Exorcist. 8/10 George Brooks
Lucabrasisleeps As a big fan of Kill list, I was really looking forward to this one. Those high expectations may be the big problem. The predictable replies would be there. Yes, maybe more viewings might be necessary. But personally I am the kind of person who would like some sort of an attraction in the movie for me to watch again. I was not particularly interested in the setting. The setting was a thoroughly desolate part of England. The characters were somewhat irritating. When the main character is so spineless, it is a little difficult to continue watching. The others were not too interesting to me either. I didn't like the comedy aspect much either. It felt like they were trying too hard to be smart. It didn't seem like I was watching people from 200 years ago, it felt like I was watching a bunch of drunk guys in the present time watching football. The comedy seems forced and I couldn't appreciate it. For a long time, it was moving on aimlessly and finally they hit upon a treasure hunt. So what was that about? I don't get it. There were some obvious drug induced behaviour at various points (during the tent scene for example). Frankly I was wondering why the characters wouldn't just kill each other. They seemed to irritate each other as well. Talking about the nudity, well you get your fair share of nudity from the men. Yes, that is disappointing but there it is. And that too, pretty ugly ones too.The whole movie can be considered as the meek striking back against the bully but I don't understand how some drug induced behaviour or black magic (I think that was a part) had any part in fighting against the bully. Yes, there was a particular scene towards the end but frankly he could have dealt with him earlier as well. In much simpler ways. But it does give some interesting visuals and nice music. And what was with the frozen shots? That doesn't make any sort of sense to me. It looked ridiculous to see that frequently in the movie. I don't get it. 4/10 (for some interesting visuals and music)
