Reviews

HalBanksy The film is directed with understated skill - the ocean is very convincing - CGI is subtle and effective. Robert Redford carries the film with a deliberate stoicism - The muted performance is refreshing, but sometimes left me wanting more. At times his character seemed genuinely unbothered by the desperate circumstances - where some outburst would have felt more appropriate.
nikhilparatkar I have no experience at sailing. I've barely been on a boat for an hour in my entire life. But I just couldn't believe that this guy can be a seasoned seaman. Nope. He just looked like an incompetent old man sailing across the ocean for whatever reason. In about 20 mins since the start of the movie, I had decided that whatever bad happens to this guy at the sea, he deserves it for his own stupidity. Camerawork is good, sounds are on point (for an ignorant non-seaman) and the acting also seems quite good. So why was this guy shown so incompetent?
santospoland This film is brilliant, Robert Redford is exceptionally powerful in this film, I see some poor reviews which startles me somewhat but I know that people have different reactions to stories. To me the film is metaphorical of our times, confused, desperate, dooms day clock at 2 to midnight, climate change crisis and so on - it is literally not about any of these topics but the film offers enough generosity to allow for an exploratory interpretation.I recommend this film, be prepared to find a quiet spot and turn up the volume enough to have a good experience. I hope you love the movie as much as I. do. Don't bring popcorn by the way.
John Fisher This film should not work. A man struggles to stay alive as "fate" sends him test after test after test. There are almost no words - one man, his boat and the elements. I'm not sure what makes it work - Redford is clearly a big factor but I guess the story of one man's desire to stay living is as profound as it is simple. Special.
