Reviews

cearagenovesi Along Came Polly is a romantic comedy where one of the main characters gets cheated on and they spiral. On their honeymoon, Lisa cheats on Reuben with a scuba instructor, hurting Reuben immensely (as it would anyone). He reacts by immediately trying to find someone else to date, rather than wallow in his misery. Many films within the cheated-on subgenre follow one of these tracks: the moving on quickly or the wallowing. Both tracks allow for humor, though I think the moving on track makes it easier to laugh along because wallowing is sadder. The two main women within the love triangle of Reuben's life make it difficult for the viewer to root for one over the other. Lisa, the wife who left Reuben, obviously is the "bad guy" of the movie, but she is also the one who is clearly made for Reuben. She acted terribly by jumping into bed with a stranger while on her honeymoon and while she comes back to Reuben hoping he'll take her back, he tells her he cannot (after some debate). Polly, the crazy risk-taker, is the complete opposite of Reuben. The old saying that opposites attract makes the viewer want to root for Polly and Reuben to end up together even though they do not have the same goals in life. Any logical person, any realistic person, would think that there is no way these two would be able to have a sustainable relationship. However, that is the funny thing about romantic comedies: they are not rational. Polly changes Reuben for the better and they end up happily together, as most romantic comedies end. Cinematically, this movie was well done and well written. Portraying the personalities of Reuben and Polly was done very effectively through dialogue with each other, with the other characters that they interacted with, and through their homes. From scene to scene, transitions were clear and the videography was smooth, capturing all details of the characters' surroundings and their movements. I think that this movie is underrated because I had not heard much about it before. Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston are the two main characters, both well-known actors, making it surprising that I had not heard of this movie. They are both also popular choices for romantic comedies, so perhaps this one is just not considered as good as others. However, I think this movie deserves more attention that it has received because the plot line is interesting and the acting is great. If you are considering watching this, I highly recommend.
betty dalton Most hilarious socially embarassing jokes ever. Childlike fart jokes abound. Funny as hell though and that comes from me who really doesnt like these kind of jokes usually. But the jokes are excecuted with a finesse that is just excellent! Especially the first half of the movie makes my stumach hurt from laughter. Lots of praise for Philip Seymour Hoffman whose talent is extra ordinarily funny in this movie: "let it rain", " white chocolate". You will know what I meant when you see the hilarious and messy basketball scene. Even writing this review I often burst out in laughing remembering the funny scenes. It is a new comedy classic. One of Ben Stiller's best. One of Jennifer Anniston loveliest ever. One of Philip Seymour Hoffman funniest ever. I just couldnt stop laughing and had to restrain myself in order not to wake the neighbours! I AM A HAPPY HIPPO !
gavin6942 A buttoned up newlywed (Ben Stiller) finds his too organized life falling into chaos when he falls in love with an old classmate (Jennifer Aniston). At its core, this is a romantic comedy. And as such, it has the problem of following that same plot that all romantic comedies follow. So the film cannot be given too much credit as far as originality goes. But it does have a bit more humor, because Stiller is not your typical leading man. He is not overly handsome by any means, and often not even funny. What really sells this film, though, and makes it more good than bad, is the performance of Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Although only a supporting role, he is pretty darn funny, and steals every scene he is in -- the basketball scene, the insurance pitch... he is brilliant.
Python Hyena Along Came Polly (2004): Dir: John Hamberg / Cast: Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Debra Messing, Hank Azaria: Romantic comedy about chance and risks. Ben Stiller and Debra Messing get married and are off on their honeymoon but an invitation to go scuba diving ends in infidelity. Heart-broken Stiller tries to move on and eventually encounters old school mate Jennifer Aniston as a waitress at a party. He decides to ask her out, which leads to spicy foods that make him break out in a sweat. He also gets caught up in Latin dancing, which leaves him standing at the side. And to top it off she has a half blind ferret that bumps into everything. Director John Hamberg times the jokes perfectly and is backed by a fine cast. Stiller and Aniston have fine comedic chemistry but thankfully they are both given the background and payoff to pull this above routine. Phillip Seymour Hoffman steals scenes as a washed out actor who comes up with a vulgar term called "sharted" at a party. Messing is effective as Stiller's ex-wife who moves on to what she believes is better potential. Hank Azaria plays the hunk whom Messing cheats on Stiller for. He is a scuba instructor but apparently he instructs her in other activities. What isn't appealing is its apparent anti-marriage theme as if to say that all marriages end in infidelity. With that said this is one of the misfire comedies to come along. Score: 5 / 10
