zkonedog After watching this third installment of the Austin Powers film series, one can't help but wonder how director Jay Roach can get by with using the same type of humor for three go-'rounds. Well, the answer is simple: The characters are just too darn funny to get old!For a basic plot summary, "Goldmember" sees Austin Powers (Mike Myers) once again battling Dr. Evil (Myers), this time with 1970s "supervillain" Goldmember (Myers), a spoof of the classic James Bond villain Goldfinger, thrown in for good measure.Once again, the same basic jokes and tone of humor is used in this effort, but it just never seems to get old in the least. Plus, more of an actual storyline (dealing with "daddy issues") is present in this one than in its two predecessors. New characters Nigel Powers (Michael Caine) & Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce) also add a bit of spice to the cast.Overall, this film simply keeps the Austin Powers comedy ball rolling. It may have slipped a tiny bit from "The Spy Who Shagged Me", but nowhere near enough to drop it a star ranking.
Troy Putland Goldmember completes the Austin Powers franchise with little more than a nod to the 1st and 2nd films. The story's recycled again, Dr. Evil (Myers) insists on world domination, Austin Powers (Myers) awkwardly saves the day. It's not rocket science. Myers is up to his usual tricks; Evil garners the most laughs and Powers is, well, Powers. Mini Me gets the discriminated, but they're still just as funny. The 3rd installment sees two new inclusions, Beyonce Knowles's Bond-esque girl Foxxy Cleopatra, who lacks the emotional pull that Heather Graham had, and Michael Caine as Austin Powers' father, Nigel Powers, who fits his role suitably. Myers' Goldmember and the returning Fat Bastard fair less better. Still, Myers carries on doing what he does best, and that's making (most) viewers laugh.Check out my other reviews on http://straighttelling.co.uk
kechhh Surprisingly, this was my favorite Austin Powers movie out of the series while it seems to be the least favorite of everyone else. Many of the jokes are rehashed, and while funny, were still not as funny as the first time they are used. Despite this, I feel this movie came up with a decent amount of new jokes and stupid circumstances which I thought were incredibly hilarious. The acting was once again good enough for what the movie achieved.I think that this was a fitting end for the conclusion of the series. The jokes about Austin Powers are definitely reaching their end, but I think that this series gave enough good laughs for it to be worthy to watch by someone who hasn't seen it before.
HawkHerald So the first and second films in the Austin Powers were pretty funny. It parodied the inherent camp of the old 007 films of the 60's and 70's making Mike Myers a huge star. This was the third film he starred in as the character and it shows it's age. The "Yeah, baby" catchphrase was old and there's only so much of one actor playing a bunch of unfunny one liner characters you can watch. It seems these days if you want to see a comedian trying to hard to be funny then look for a fat suit or other outrageous costume and multiple roles in one film. The saddest thing is when viewing a movie like this is that you know Mike Myers is capable of something better. He's a versatile performer, a good writer and has shown some serious acting talent in films like 54. This movie came across as a desperate attempt at making money.
