adonis98-743-186503 Disenchanted with the movie industry, Chili Palmer tries the music industry, meeting and romancing a widow of a music executive on the way. Be Cool starts with one of the most cheesiest scenes in Cinema where some old 2 pals kill James Woods and the shooter's hair come off like why? Vince Vaughn talks like a gangster and The Rock wears an obvious wig and acts like a jerk. Overall a terrible film from start to finish and i can't believe that F. Gary Gray directed it. (0/10)
Python Hyena Be Cool (2005): Dir: F. Gary Gray / Cast: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Vince Vaughn, Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson: Surprisingly superior sequel to Get Shorty. It regards attitude and ability as ex-mobster Chilli Palmer retires from the movie business and focuses on music when he hears a voice that has potential for greater success. Clever plot with numerous surprise developments. Director F. Gary Gray delivers his greatest work so far with a fantastic ensemble cast. John Travolta as Chilli, is smooth and unsurprised or threatened by the danger around him. He seeks new opportunities and seems unaffected by difficulties by those opposing. Uma Thurman plays a washed out record producer with an Aerosmith tattoo on her ass. As aided by Palmer she surpasses blackmail and threats until arriving at the film's one corny weakness and that is its reliance on Pulp Fiction for appeal. Both Travolta and Thurman did a dance that should have been left in the Tarantino film. Vince Vaughn is hilarious as another producer who thinks he is black. He steals scenes with frantic brutality and a clumsy finale. He works for a scheming producer played by Harvey Keitel who attempts to counter Palmer and loses. Dwayne Johnson steals scenes as a gay bodyguard. Interesting look into the business of record producing and greed. The result is a film that is beyond cool. Score: 9 / 10
Scarecrow-88 Slick gangster music industry comedy has John Travolta as cool as the other side of the pillow (RIP Stuart Scott), returning as "reformed gangster" Chili Palmer from "Get Shorty", moving from producing movies to hoping he can establish a hot young singer (Christina Milian) as the next best thing. He'll have to dangle with her current numbskull agent (a sleazy Harvey Keitel), low level Russian gangsters, and a music producer known for his creative, inventive, and lucrative mixes (Cedric the Entertainer, entertaining as only he can). With Keitel employing a white gangsta wannabe (Vince Vaughn, totally involved in this part, in language and tone, in dress and mannerisms; this is all purposely over-the-top) and a gentle-natured, homosexual movie-star hopeful (The Rock, stealing the film when he's in it; complete with afro and easily bruised ego), he hopes to "influence" Chili into leaving his hot commodity alone. Meanwhile, Cedric demands money owed to him by the music company now owned by widow Uma Thurman, who has become romantically and professionally involved with Chili. This film has as good a comic cast as you could ask for. Even Robert Pastorelli (may he also rest in peace; it would be eye-opening if we just thought about all the great character actors we have lost in just the last ten years) and Debi Mazar (as a cop) show up in supporting parts. But I have to give mad props to André Benjamin, as a rather pathetic thug, employed for an always-embarrassed Cedric who gets annoyed by him all the time, particularly when they need to look badass. André's mishandling of a gun and his awareness in looking the part but failing to do so is comic gold. Cedric's monologue about African-American influence in American pop culture and way of life to a Russian mobster (with two black eyes thanks to Chili!) before shooting him is a definite highlight. Seeing Chili stare down guns pointed in his direction and always being able to avoid violence to his person gives him a major cool the film exploits; Travolta owns this part, and it is all his. The Rock's "Bring it On" monologue to Chili as a type of audition is quite amusing. Vaughn's scene with Pastorelli during a lunch over shooting the wrong man is hilarious as both are sizing each other up, with plenty of tension involved. Not in the same league as "Get Shorty" but not without its treats, "Be Cool" isn't a total loss. I prefer satires on the movie industry but Cedric and André are so much fun that I was plentiful entertained. While rated PG-13, this is as close to an R without being rated one that I can find.
marcus-v-cox Be Cool is the 'largely unnecessary' sequel to 'Get Shorty' which didn't really leave room for one anyway. The movie opens with Chili Palmer (Travolta) and his friend Tommy Athens (James Woods) (who are both big in the music business), having lunch at a café. Randomly and without warning some black-eyed man pulls up in a car and shoots Tommy. The issue of his death soon blows over and then the so called 'main story' line progresses. The story seems to be about complications in the music business and the relationships between the characters. The movie follows many story lines including Chili and his friend Edie (Therman), a wanna be African American called Raji (Vaughn) and his chauffeur Elliot and a rich gangster called Sin who goes around bullying the other characters for money. The movie has a great cast with Travolta, Therman and Vaughn, but they don't really know what they are doing half the time. It seems as though the order of the movie wasn't thought out very well and scenes in the movie are very loosely stitched together on a weak plot line. A lot of the scenes are extremely monotonous also and just stall the movie. As for the script, its god awful and mainly consists of afro American lingo, unnecessary shouting and swearing and absolutely crappy one-liners. The movie doesn't really develop very well and the characters almost have and attitude of sarcasm and superficiality towards each other. At the end the happily ever after is somewhat unsatisfying and characters who were real pricks get their way.As a lover of film, this movie's existence insults me and this 2 hour monster of a production is not a good waste of quality time and will leave you thinking 'how did film this bad even reach my TV?'.
