Germaine Fryc Aniston did an excellent portrayal of a woman in big, chronic pain. Both emotional and physical, and when the meds were and weren't working. She should win awards for her acting. I hope others who see the film, think of the people in their lives that have chronic pain, and understand even just a bit of what they are going thru. The scenes where she can barely breathe because of the pain are bang on, or when in bed and can hardly move due to the pain. Even the sounds she makes "when in pain" are exactly right. The way she turns without moving her head and the way she stands up are perfect. The weariness of dealing with the pain is so real looking.
InaneSwine The main thing Cake really has going for it would be the strength of Aniston's performance. She's already proved her solid comic timing in Friends and the stream of so-so romcoms that followed. Here, she uses comedy to heighten the drama and heartache of her caustic character. She makes it an uncomfortable watch, as you genuinely believe she's in pain throughout the film.Unfortunately, the screenplay lacks a coherent sense of direction; the scenes featuring Anna Kendrick's character constantly feel like a distraction, like moments that simply get in the way of the story, and and the film really wasted its opportunity as one of the few films covering the topic of chronic pain by bumbling into yet another film about grief. However, it does give Aniston some wicked one-liners, and a few scenes are very moving indeed.
aliases-53334 I am actually surprised by the bad reviews that this movie has received. I will attribute it to the unlikeness of the character, acted (masterfully) by Jennifer Aniston. This is a story of a woman who has been through a terrible tragedy, and I will not say more about that since this is something to discover slowly as the film reveals itself. This is an "experience" movie, which is not about a mystery or a thriller, but is about the personal experience of the characters in everyday life events. Jennifer Aniston has bravely portrayed a woman who has been through a personal tragedy, and is trying to maintain a routine and sustain some connection with the few people in her life. We are not fully connected with that woman at first, until we realise the nature of her tragedy and understand how it effected her. In my opinion, it is only then that the viewer understands the true value of this film and is being rewarded for their patience. This film delivers with fantastic acting on all parts, great script and a satisfying ending. Its only fault is that you would only want to watch it once, because of the hard topic and the unlikeness of the main character.
MattyGibbs Cake follows a woman who is obsessed by the death of a woman in her support group. It's a bleak tale with little light and shade as Jennifer Aniston tries to overcome her demons. I thought that Aniston did an OK job in her role but it really is just a one tone performance. The supporting cast don't really add a lot to the story and it all becomes a little tedious. I don't mind slow moving movies as long as their is some pay off but sadly I didn't get anything from this film. It doesn't go anywhere and just left me feeling empty. Unless you are in the mood to be left as depressed at the character in the film, I'd skip this one.
