Tweekums This instalment in the successful franchise is set aboard a cruise ship touring the Mediterranean. Wellington Crowther is the captain of the ship and he believes the key to his success is having a crew who have served together for many years and all know how each other operate... which is a bit of a problem when he discovers his First Officer, Doctor, Chef, Steward and barman have all been replaced. They don't create a great first impression either; the chef suffers from seasickness, the barman doesn't know how to mix the captain's favourite drink and he walks in on the doctor and a female passenger and finds them in a compromising position... this being a Carry On it is all a misunderstanding of course. As well as the crew there are some passengers of note; Flo and Gladys, a couple of young ladies, Bridget Madderley, a slightly batty older woman and an unnamed gentleman who spends most of his time propping up the bar. Over the course of the cruise the crew will come together, there will be many misunderstandings and one couple will fall in love. The most obvious weakness here is the shortage of regular Carry On characters; Sid James plays it fairly straight as the captain, Kenneth Williams is his usual self as the First Officer and Kenneth Connor is the shy doctor; they all put in decent performances but I can't help feeling this would have been quite a bit better with two or three more of the regular team. Liz Fraser and Dilys Laye were fine as Glad and Flo, although for the most part they were involved in the romantic subplots rather than providing the laughs. Some of the best laughs from the non-regulars came from Esma Cannon who played Bridget Madderley; her character was very much a female Charles Hawtrey! The gags were funny enough and it lacked the unnecessary smut of the later outing which wasn't a bad thing. There was one major flaw though... it didn't feel like they were at sea! Apart from a few establishing shots as they went into port it felt very firmly land based. Over all it is an okay way to pass the time, there is nothing to offend and there are enough laughs; there are no classic moments either though which is a shame.
Trebaby I'm a Yank who's always loved British comedy and I'm sorta amazed that the reputation of this series never really traveled over to this side of the pond.I haven't seen all of the Carry Ons, but of the ones I've enjoyed, Cruising stands out. I'm not sure why it doesn't get the love of the later films. Maybe it's because it's a relatively laid-back affair with a breezy sense of humor that never really sinks into toilet jokes or smutty double entendres. Some say that Sid and Kenneth are underused - my opinion is that they're like a dash of cayenne pepper in the mix. A little dab'll do ya! I miss Charles Hawtrey but Lance Percival is hilarious. The color works well and the sets are very elaborate, especially the shot when the camera pans down into the ship's swimming pool. I showed this one to my girlfriend (who generally doesn't like older movies) and she was laughing out loud the whole time. There seems to be a minority who rate this entry highly. For my money this one's better than Cleo and Cowboy...maybe not as good as Screaming. Just my 2 cents.
didi-5 Before the 'Carry On' series had busty Barbara Windsor and more than a subtle touch of the bawdy about it, this funny example took to sea with some of the regulars (the crumpled Sid James, the priceless Kenneth Williams, and boggle-eyed Kenneth Connor). With the wonderful Esma Cannon getting tiddled in the bar, and Lance Percival as a disgustingly inventive cook, it couldn't miss. The best bits by a long way include Connor's clumsy courtship of Liz Fraser; alongside Williams' stilted and self-righteous officer, all nostrils and hardly-hidden indignation. Very funny, as most of the 'Carry Ons' were.
richard.fuller1 Just as I am getting used to who these people are, three of them aren't in this movie.Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims and Charlie Hawtrey aren't in "Cruising."I thought at first the bartender was Hawtrey. I wonder if they wanted him for the part.Yes, the cook was the funniest person here. After six movies, there still seems to be some uncertainty as to what Kenneth Williams is capable of.Still a bit confused as to what the appeal of Kenneth Conner could have been, and Sid James seems a bit lost to me as well, after him in three of these movies. The movie didn't play up the exotic holiday feel as Love Boat would later do on television. I get the impression they could have done that very well. As the first Carry On in color, this one could have been better. A bit disappointed to not hear the familiar theme. Thought at first it was a bit of a nautical version, but it was an entirely different tune.Well, on to the next Carry On: Carry On Cabby.
