BA_Harrison Independent scary movies shot on meagre budgets by enthusiastic amateurs are categorised as underground horror, but the same moniker could also be applied to a small sub-genre of films that take place in the dark, labyrinthine tunnels of underground railways, highly entertaining examples including Gary Sherman's Death Line (1972), Maurice Devereaux's End of the Line (2007), and Ryûhei Kitamura's The Midnight Meat Train (2008). Christopher Smith's debut Creep, which is set in the London underground, isn't anywhere near as good as those films, with a plot that is full of holes, characters that are hard to care about (victims include a drug dealer, a would-be rapist, and a couple of homeless heroin addicts), and a disappointing lack of splatter.Franka Potente plays Kate, whose mission to have sex with George Clooney leads her to take a late night tube ride where she encounters a cannibalistic mutant who feeds on unwary passengers. Trapped underground, Kate must battle to stay alive until the morning. What sounds like a lean, mean set-up ripe for scares is actually predictable and dull, and makes little sense: people have obviously been disappearing from the platforms of Charing Cross for quite some time, yet no-one seems to have noticed, not even with the mutant leaving long trails of blood in his wake (perhaps he nips back with a mop and bucket to clean up his mess, but I doubt it). There's some attempt at a back story for the creature (whose name is revealed to be Craig - I kid you not), but not nearly enough to make sense of.The majority of the film involves lots of wandering through dark tunnels, wallowing in filth and hiding from Craig, culminating in the expected showdown between Kate and the killer. At the end of the film, a bedraggled Kate is seen sat on a platform, having survived her ordeal, although there's a good chance that she will have contracted hepatitis having submersed herself in raw sewage in order to escape. Swings and roundabouts...
kathrynthompson-76630 Being from London and living near these parts few years ago now was one of the reasons why i watched this film, watched it twice now and still cant grasp or work out the background of the killer, i come to the conclusion it was some sort of hospital attached to the underline station, confusing as to why some walls were bricked up, a bit gory in some parts, the homeless couple were very convincing and played there part well, to be honest first time i watched it and Kate fell asleep after drinking something out of a bottle and smoking a bit of something at the party i thought she fell in to a deep sleep and she would wake up having dreamt the whole sorry saga, then i think viewers would have crucified Chris Smith, still a watchable horror that i would not watch alone in the dark lol.
MattyGibbs This is a relatively low budget but enjoyable horror from a promising director. The action is set in the London underground which makes for an unusual and grim setting. The acting is more than passable for a low budget film and the monster is suitably creepy. There are plenty of good set pieces and whilst not overly scary it is tense and gory enough to satisfy horror fans. I am surprised at the low rating of this film, I have seen far worse similar films and most people I know who have seen this film enjoyed it. If you like British horror and want something easy to watch then this film won't let you down.
Nitzan Havoc WARNING: This is not a "complete synopsis" review summarizing the movie and criticizing the acting. If you've wanted such a review - I respectfully suggest you seek another review.I am not a movie critique, not even a cinema student. I'm your average "pls mess with my head!" horror fan, and a huge one. I think I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I've seen around 90% of all the horror films of the past two decades or so. This one, imho, is one for the pantheon. In the horror / psych-thriller genre - one can easily differentiate between the crazed charismatic intellectual antagonist (i.e. Hannibal Lecter, "Jigsaw") and the slasher-monster-freak (i.e. Jason Worhees, Freddy Kruger). I'm a great fan of the latter. For instance, I really liked the characters portrayed by Kane in "See No Evil" and by the "Butcher" in the 2008 version of "Train"/"Terror Train" (couldn't find the guy's name...).However, having watched Creep - I have found the scariest, creepiest and most disturbing Killer-Freak of them all. Sean Harris's performance in this film is no less then dumbfounding, shocking and astonishing. In this day and age, the feeling of fear, frustration, helplessness and disgust is often delivered to us through close ups of dismembered body parts and medical pornography. Not so in Creep. Here - one feels revolted merely by looking at "the creep". Great way to make the audience feel a pinch of the unpleasantness experienced by the characters in the story. Honestly, if you can look at the guy and remain calm - you're tougher than I am :) Some of you might disagree, and I respectfully accept that. However, if you ask me? Regardless to the plot (that isn't the most original one nor the most brilliant, though not the worst!), the acting and any other aspect of the movie, I for one will never forget this film. "Craig" aka The Creep is my number one monster/freak horror character of all times!
