alanshills Dawn of the Dead is a remake of an older zombie film by the same name but in my opinion, it is a superior effort- which is strange as most remakes are inferior in quality. The major change here is that Snyder has decided to make the zombies have the capacity to run, which is a scary thought indeed. As creepy as the slow undead were there was always the chance to outmaneuver them, but things are not so simple this time around. The usual zombie trope of a bunch of characters clustered together and hiding away is how the film goes about it but it manages to characterize the survivors instead of just using them as zombie fodder. Some scenes are terrifying and there is a palpable sense of tension. This is a great horror movie and a great zombie one also. Go watch it.
rodmarcel This movie is just fun to watch and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Typical zombie shooting is all I can say and it has fun characters to watch.
Michael_Elliott Dawn of the Dead (2004) *** (out of 4) Remake of George A. Romero's 1978 masterpiece has a zombie outbreak happening and a group of survivors take shelter inside a mall. At first the diverse group of people are fighting but they finally come together to try and survive the ordeal. In my opinion, the original DAWN OF THE DEAD is one of the top three horror films ever made so going into this remake expecting it to live up to that would be rather stupid. The first time I watched this film I really didn't like it and to this day I must admit that I have a problem with these super fast, superhero like zombies. With that said, this second viewing of this 2004 version actually worked a lot better and I found myself enjoying the film even with its flaws.I must also admit that I'm not the biggest fan of director Zach Snyder. For the most part I think he brings a lot of flash and style to his movies but very little substance and I thought that was the case here. I thought the film was way too flashy for its own good and I must say that I didn't even like the look of the movie. As I previously stated I'm not really a fan of the fast zombie but I really disliked the various CGI zombies here as well as the way some of them seemed to be better fitted for a MATRIX movie.Having said all of that, I still find myself enjoying the characters and the performances from the actors. The film actually had a few nice ideas and I must admit that I liked the rather grim outcome and the fact that none of the characters were really safe. The film also benefits from some nice changes in the story including what impact the gun store has on the outcome. The mall setting was just a great idea by Romero and while it's not used as well here it's still a good option to have.DAWN OF THE DEAD isn't a masterpiece like the original but even with all of the flaws it's still an entertaining movie.
utahman1971 I cannot understand the hate of fake gore. People say it is unnecessary but it is really necessary. All the movies without it are unnecessary, because it is part of horror but not all of horror for a movie. Cutting it out is just basically turning it into a thriller.Irritating to hear someone claim they are a horror fan but can't stand the fake gore. WTH? Do not ever call yourself a horror fan, if you have to only watch movies without gore. Argument never stands with saying there is no need for the fake gore. From start to finish, this is an awesome gory zombie movie. Anyone that keeps talking smack about gore, just is not all there in the head. You could say the for me, that likes it. Well, I do not consider a horror movie without it a horror movie. This movie starts in a hospital and a nurse working, then after work goes home to her husband, but while at work a patient is taken with a bite. Turns out we don't know what is going on until she gets home and hangs out with her husband and has sex, she takes a shower and sleeps at night. In the morning is when hell breaks loose with zombies getting more and more coming. All of a sudden her husband is attack by a kid next door biting him and turning him into one, and then she leaves with her husband trying to attack her.The rest just gets more interesting. You can watch it for yourselves. It is awesome, and for the fake gore haters. Just keep in your PG-13 club, and all the real horror fans will enjoy the real actual horror movies.
