rodrig58 I've seen it twice, at a distance of ten years. Everything is of great quality, original script, impeccable actors play, very careful direction, professional image, in short, a very good film.
Leofwine_draca The box hails this as a Hitchcockian thriller but it's a far cry from the films of the late master. Instead, DERAILED is a half-average modern-day thriller, with a few genuinely decent twists to recommend it and a strong central performer in Clive Owen. Unfortunately it suffers from a never-ending stream of plot holes and irregularities, as well as a tacked-on Hollywood-style ending that pushes the viewer's patience a little bit too far.On the plus side, it's a well-paced film that never outstays its welcome, and it pushes the boundaries of violence into uncomfortable, sometimes startling territory. But where this film fails in comparison to something like UNFAITHFUL is the script; the characters are threadbare, and refuse to be fleshed out, and it's hard to find any sympathy for those involved. Of them all, Melissa George is perhaps the most sympathetic character – after all she wasn't responsible for anything that happened. Sadly George's character is barely seen and a latter-day confrontation with her philandering husband lacks impact as a result.Owen plays a weak and weedy character and he does a grand job – he's far more at home here than in something like KING ARTHUR. Jennifer Aniston, bless her, can't act for toffee and keeps the same devoid-of-expression face throughout the film. Vincent Cassel, typecast now as a sleazy villain, gives value for money as his criminal rapist is somebody you really love to hate. Lower down the cast, Tom Conti uncomfortably mixes with some rappers-turned-movie stars; of the two, Xzibit is halfway decent while RZA needs to go to drama school. The film strives to build suspense but it only occasionally works. The twists, when they come, are genuinely decent and of the SIXTH SENSE variety; you won't believe what you're seeing. Unfortunately things degenerate into another typical shoot-out whereas I am sure the screenwriter could have come up with a more original way to end the story. As a result, DERAILED is a nice effort to do something a bit different, but the plot holes just drag it down too much.
tomsview This is a clever thriller that could also serve as a cautionary tale – look what happens when you cheat on your wife. It is hard to say much about the story without giving the surprises away, and although we have seen variations of the plot a few times before, this movie really works – it is compulsively watchable from start to finish. However, the filmmakers couldn't let the movie finish at a natural point and gave it yet another finale. Not that it lessens the entertainment value but it does expose a few plot holes that were not as noticeable in the rest of the movie because of its pace and energy. The story is told in flashback by Charles Shine from a prison cell. Charles, played by Clive Owen, relates how he was a successful advertising executive who after saying goodbye to his wife and daughter as usual one morning heads into the city on the train. He meets Lucinda Harris played by Jennifer Aniston who is also travelling to work, and is also married with a daughter. Both seem troubled and vulnerable at this point in their lives. Charles is deeply attracted to her, and they strike up a friendship, which eventually leads to an appointment in a cheap hotel room. But things take an unexpected turn.Clive Owen is convincing in his role as the solid family man and reliable employee who seems to have a darker, riskier side to his nature – it makes believable the way he handles the crisis that his rashness has brought about. Jennifer Aniston gives a surprisingly unsympathetic performance – it is actually a brave one considering that stars are usually protective of their familiar screen image. However it is Victor Cassel who really stands out. I remembered him from "Irreversible" and "The Birthday Girl", where he was equally disturbing and unforgettable. He was also in the more recent "A Dangerous Method", and although that role was small, it was telling. The man projects danger as few stars do. It is not mindless menace but is all the more threatening because of the intelligence behind it.In "Derailed", the violence and the obvious pleasure Cassel's character, Philippe LaRoche, takes in tormenting Charles makes Clive Owens' character seem sympathetic. This despite the fact that he has not only betrayed his wife but also his diabetic daughter, eventually losing the money that has been put aside for her treatment, all triggered by his illicit affair with Lucinda – that's the power of movies to manipulate the emotions. The movie is many notches above the average thriller, and it is hard to see why it received so much negative criticism. When a movie gets you on the edge of your seat like this one does, surely it has passed the effectiveness test. Anyway word of mouth seems to have made it the success it deserves to be.
Seth Hernandez Seth Hernandez Carlie Smith English 1301 20 November 2012 Derailed is a movie that got a 6.5 out of 10 rating in IMDb. This movie was about an ordinary married man and a moderate woman who meet each other on a train. They start spending time together and keep in touch with each other. They decide to go to a hotel and have an affair. During this time a mugger shows up into their room, beats Charlie and rapes Lucinda. They later go on with their lives for a couple of months. The mugger later blackmails Charlie to giving him all sorts of money or he was going to tell his wife or do something to his family. Charlie is forced to do what he asks. The director uses situational irony to bring suspense to the movie. He uses situational irony by showing that Charlie is doing everything possible so the mugger doesn't mess with Lucinda. When in the long run Lucinda is the one who is actually hurting him and Charlie is clueless on the situation. Even though the rating for Derailed was not that high. The use of situational irony helped move the plot and made it more interesting to me the viewer. It made it interesting because it set you up to think a certain way, then it dramatically changed when you were least expecting it. I like the way it did that because it not only made it an action thriller, but a psychological thriller as well. Overall, the movie was interesting because it grabbed my attention and made me wonder what would happen next. The actors in this movie did an exceptional job in playing their roles. They were very convincing and Jennifer Aniston played the role of Lucinda well despite her not being known for playing such a role. She made it seem as if she was a victim in the situation, when in the scheme of things, she played the most important role. Then you have Clive Owen who played the role of Charlie. He did a good job in playing such an innocent role and really got into his character. I feel that this movie should of maybe got a better rating then a 6.5 out of 10 If it was me, then I would have given it a 8 out of 10 rating. People may disagree with my review over this movie. They may say that it was not good, just look at the rating it got a 6.5 out of 10. One thing that the movie might not have done well was the way the movie ended. It was somewhat close to a Cinderella movie ending because Charlie got away with almost having an affair and went on with his life. His wife never found out about anything that he was doing. I feel that they could have made the ending better. Maybe do something drastic to cause another dramatic twist so the viewer could be left in awe. Other then that I feel the movie should have received the rating I recommended.
