Wizard-8 I'm not an expert on Dario Argento, having only seen a few of his films, but I do know that his fans generally feel his most recent movies are not up to his older films. From this film (and after earlier seeing his Dracula film), I think I can see why that is the case. As you probably have concluded from the title, this movie is aimed at being a tip of the hat to Alfred Hitchcock, and it does indeed have a number of references to several Hitchcock movies. And the movie does have three scenes (an outdoor scene taking place in the rain at night, a bathtub sequence, and the climatic sequence) that do have a taste of the suspense style Hitchcock was known for. Yet even in those three scenes, the movie doesn't have the impact found in Hitchcock's (as well as Argento's) best films. The movie has three big problems. First, it's really cheaply made. Even though the story didn't require stuff like special effects, the movie has a real tacky look. The second problem is that the movie is really slow for the first two-thirds. Padding abounds. The third problem is that the central protagonist is not very sympathetic. In fact, he's kind of annoying. I could list a number of other problems with the movie, like what the point of that long opening scene was, but that would be redundant. To sum up, this is disappointing stuff for Argento and/or Hitchcock fans. About the kindest thing that can be said about the movie is that it isn't as bad as Argento's "Dracula".
TheUnknown837-1 I *loved* the *idea* of the Dario Argento movie "Do You Like Hitchcock?" Being an admirer and fanatic of the Master of Suspense myself, I was all for a movie that was not only inspired by Hitchcock's masterpieces, but made homage to them and incorporated their influence into its characters. The idea of combining elements from films such as "Vertigo", "Psycho", "Strangers on a Train", "Dial M for Murder" and most notably "Rear Window" sounded like a real winner to me. So the concept of this made-for-television film rang like solid gold, however, the final product itself is not. Rather, I'm afraid to report, it's dreck. The whole premise is like a reworking of "Rear Window." A film student obsessed with Alfred Hitchcock gets to looking out his window, especially when he breaks his leg. And he becomes convinced that his neighbor across the street has committed murder. And he's convinced that his neighbor is also a fan of Alfred Hitchcock and may have been inspired by the master's films. Now the homage and the respect to Alfred Hitchcock is admirable, however the film is not. I will admit there was one moment of suspense that I actually found credible, but everything before and after it was so unbelievably dull, so preposterously dumb, so mind-numbingly slow and inferior that the movie resulted in nothing short of being a catastrophe. I had a feeling the movie was going to be a waste of time after its peculiar and unintentionally funny opening scene. I knew that when I saw yet another unnecessary sex scene afterward that the movie was going to throw a lot of idiotic and time-slowing ideas after another.I am not familiar with the director or actors' works, but I'm sure they have done much better than what I saw here. Elio Germano is rather dull as the protagonist modeled after Jimmy Stewart's character in "Rear Window", often rushing through his lines so fast that he's opaque, his girlfriend played by Cristina Brondo hasn't a sliver of the charm of Grace Kelly, and the murderers – the characters in a Hitchcock movie that were always charismatic or interesting – are as dull as they come…and badly acted. There is no menace from them.In addition, the movie also fails because it's trying too much to be like a Hitchcock movie, modeling a lot of scenes, cinematography, sequences, and so forth after scenes from the master's filmography. The movie doesn't seem to have an original thought of its own…and what it does have of its own is rather ridiculous. As hopeful and enthusiastic I was for this film, I'm sorry to report that your time is better spent elsewhere.
slayrrr666 "Do You Like Hitchcock?" is a decent thriller, but not even close to being a slasher.**SPOILERS**Working on his thesis, film student Giulio, (Elio Germano) manages to run into neighbor Sascha, (Elisabetta Rocchetti) and her friend Federica Valli, (Chiara Conti) both Albert Hitchcock fans, at a film store where he rents films for his paper. When a strange murder occurs in her apartment nearby one day, he notices similarities between what happened and several of the events starts to mirror scenarios of Hitchcock's movies. Even though girlfriend Arianna, (Cristina Brondo) tries to convince him how ridiculous the theory is, he is still convinced when he uncovers a string of evidence that supports his theory, and when he finally has the evidence to prove it, races to stop them before the guilty party strikes again. The Good News: There was a couple of good points here to this one. The first point is that the film has a rather obvious amount of fun dealing with the Hitchcock theme. This part is quite fun, managing to incorporate a whole list of influential moments, from plot-points to camera edits and even direct scenes lifted directly from his films, none of which will be spoiled here but there's an obvious sense of fun when it deals with them. There's also a lot to like about the finale, which here is just all sorts of fun. From the revelation about the killer to the encounter in the apartment where he's being dunked under the water repeatedly all the way through to the utterly outstanding chase through the house across the street followed by the roof-top encounter all delivering quite well and certainly being quite exciting. These are all really great scenes, and that they all flow together in a natural way so as to be even more exciting. It also works well with it's one absolute stand-out scene, where the victim spies on another couple, is caught, and must escape before he is captured. Everything about this scene, from the rain-drenched setting, to it's place in the mystery, how it plays out with the failing scooter trying to work with the one person chasing after them, just works so well and is an outstanding, thrilling scene that is the best part of the film. The only other good thing about this one is the constant nudity, which is really nice as all of them look good providing it. Otherwise, that's all for this one.The Bad News: There wasn't much wrong here, and it's really only one flaw to the film. The fact that the film is more of a thriller than a straight-up horror film might be the only thing that's really wrong here, as it's more of an aesthetic choice concerning all the usual areas that come up. There's only one kill in here, brutal as it can, but nothing else, which doesn't make it fall into a stereotypical slasher, there's hardly any shots of a killer wandering around chasing after people, there's very little active threat to the hero until the end, and even then it's questionable, but these all scream this is a thriller and not a slasher. Due to that, the film can come off as just incredibly boring for some out there, since it doesn't really offer up anything that will make this one appear to be a fast-moving film, despite our introduction to the plot early on with the kill and it's short running time. There's just a lot of time spent on other elements building up the mystery that becomes routine in these kinds of films. It's something that could be a problem for those that don't enjoy that type and find themselves interested in more traditional horror-based fare, which is perhaps what is the most wrong with it. Rather than really hurting it, though, this is just a factor that boils down to being a personal preference rather than something which can truly be said to harm it, as the approach might be something that appeals to you, but there's some which don't really enjoy that and need to be warned of in here. The Final Verdict: Not that actively bad, but not really all that great either as this one just isn't a horror film like so many of his others. Give this a shot if you're into Hitchcock's films or are an unabashed Argento fan, though those looking for something approaching his earlier works will be severely disappointed here.Rated UR/R: Graphic Violence, Language and Nudity
Michael_Elliott Do You Like Hitchcock? (2005) 1/2 (out of 4) I certainly do like Hitchcock but Dario Argento's latest film is a complete and utter disaster. Argento has been called the Italian Hitchcock since his first film and this movie tries to pay homage but it falls apart on every level. The film tries to mix elements of Rear Window, Dial M For Murder and Strangers on a Train but it comes off more as an insult than anything else. A nerdy film student likes to spy on his neighbors when he discovers a young girl and her mother fighting. The next day he sees this girl in a video store discussing the plot of Strangers on a Train with another girl. A few days pass and the girl's mother is brutally murdered making the film student believe that we've got a Hitchcock copycat going on. If it wasn't for some nice film buff discussions and some great posters of various Hitchcock films then this would be even worse than the horrid Phantom of the Opera that Argento released several years back. I was pulling my hair out watching this film because it has to feature the dumbest characters in giallo history. Much like American horror films, Argento has cast this thing with young actors but what makes matters worse is that none of them can act. The dubbing is atrocious and the story seems more like a Hardy Boys mystery than an actual Argento story. It's funny this thing was made for Italian television because it features more nudity and sexuality than any other Argento film I've seen. I had really high hopes for this film but it turns out to be probably my biggest disappointment of the year.
