Adam Mangan For what it is I almost believe it was the best it could have ever been. Really really surprised. Soundtrack is absolutely awesome. I really liked it, found myself singing all the songs for whole week after. It has that amazing comedic yet tragic effect to really touch you. I always liked Neil Patrick Harris feel his eccentricity is always expressed wonderfully and this is no different. I am actually praying for a sequel. Captain Hammer is the perfect portrayal of the cliché superhero, with some ulterior motives. Watch it, It is short and their is bound to be something in it you will love.
WakenPayne Don't get me wrong, I think that for something shot in 6 Days and written as something for fun during the writer's strike... this isn't that bad. I'd go far as to say that I respect this movie really well because of the circumstances in which it was made. Well I loved this when I was 13 and in my opinion... It doesn't really hold up in my opinion but it could have been a lot worse. The plot is that Dr Horrible (Niel Patrick Harris) is a satire on the evil genius in superhero cartoons. He isn't really that evil and is in love with a do-gooder named Penny (Felicia Day). He tries his best to get into the club that villains usually hatch their diabolical plans to take over the world. When he gets the right element for a gun that can freeze people he inadvertently introduces his crush to... Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). Once he gets the freeze ray operational he fails his first diabolical plan and has to assassinate somebody and he picks the one person who the audience has wanted to die from the very start. However this satire on over the top superhero cartoons takes a dark turn when Penny dies instead of Captain Hammer. Now as I said I do respect the movie a whole lot more than I like it. Given the circumstances it could have been turned into something unwatchable. I did like Niel Patrick Harris' acting as Dr Horrible and Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer... He succeeded a little too well for my taste. I know his role was a pompous over-the-top moronic superhero but he takes it to extremes. In my opinion he is extremely annoying in the role. Felicia Day as Penny needed some more material, I mean as an audience we are given little to no reason why Dr Horrible would be in love with her.The other thing I really like about this is the music. Some of the songs are really good. I liked On The Rise and Brand New Day the most out of all of them. The other songs range from good to "Not too bad, but not too good either".So this isn't really that bad in my opinion. I mean, spoofing superhero cartoons actually could have been something great. I respect it that at the time Joss Whedon was actually trying to experiment a little bit by making this a musical. If you want a 42 minute superhero musical that could have been a lot worse than it really is then this is for you.
Alyssa Earhart Joss Wheldon's "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" was exceedingly interesting to watch. The movie was about an evil scientist who falls madly for a girl he hardly knows. They finally start talking and a perfect, strong, handsome super hero comes along and sweeps her off her feet. Throughout the entire movie Dr. Horrible longs to be considered a "super villain" and be recognized as a threat by the other villains'' of the world and more specifically the "Evil League of Evil". He also longs to be desired by the girl he fell for. He sees that the superhero isn't good for her, but is just trying to find a way to get the girl to see this. I think the whole concept of this movie is great! It might seem silly to some people but the "cheesiness" of it makes it all the more better. The singing in the movie actually helped to make clear what each character was feeling/thinking at each specific part in the movie. The diverse attitudes of the characters added an interesting flare to the movie as well. For example Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillian) was clearly used to getting everything he wants, and for Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris) things never turn out the way they are supposed to. Overall I think that this movie was fantastic! I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a little comedy once and a while!
Renee Goforth Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog (2008) is a comedy that follows a want-to-be super villain genius who dreams of becoming a member of the Evil League of Evil, run by its' scary leader, Black Horse. Dr. Horrible talks to us via his blog, answering fan mail and talking about his evil plans. He also reveals how he is madly in love with a girl named Penny, which his alter-ego Billy often refers to as the girl of his dreams. Billy/ Dr. Horrible is played by Neil Patrick Harris, who is known for playing comedic rolls, making this movie a walk in the park for him. The girl of his dreams (Penny) is played by Felicia Day, who has been in a wide variety of films. Casting them along with Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer was comedy genius. This movie consists of the typical good vs. evil theme, but with a slight twist. Instead of rooting for the good guy (Captain Hammer), you find yourself rooting for the bad guy (Dr. Horrible/Billy). Often breaking into song through out the movie, Captain Hammer gets the girl, leaving Dr. Horrible heartbroken. Seeing no other way to get the girl, he throws himself into his work, creating the freeze ray. He focuses on getting into the Evil League of Evil, and hopes his success will impress Penny. Unfortunately for Dr. Horrible/Billy, things do not go as planned. While his plan seems to be going perfect, things backfire and Captain Hammer avoids being killed by Dr. Horrible/ Billy. Penny was not so lucky, being struck by a piece of Dr. Horrible/Billy's freeze ray. Dr. Horrible/ Billy loses the one thing he truly loved, but he got exactly what he wanted. He was accepted in to the Evil League of Evil, and considered the worst super villain ever. He got everything he wanted, but at the same time he lost everything he needed. Although Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog appears to be a typical good vs. evil type of movie, it turns out to be a comical story that pulls on your heart strings at the end when the beloved Penny dies. The end can appear shocking to some, because it lacks the traditional happy ending, in an ironic kind of way. Dr. Horrible/ Billy achieved his dream, what he thought would make him happy. Unfortunately, he lost what truly did make him happy.
