Prismark10 Extract stars Jason Bateman as Joel, a successful businessman who sells flavours. He works hard in his factory which is full of oddball employees, most of them seem to be lazy or inept but Joel knows them all by their first names and his door is always open.Despite his success, Joel has an unsatisfactory sex life, his wife Suzie (Kristen Wiig) never seems to be in the mood. His neighbour always bothers him. Joel is tempted to stray when a beautiful temp is hired Cindy (Mila Kunis) who is really a thief and a con woman. She plans to befriend an injured employee who lost a testicle in a freak accident at the factory and persuade him to go for a big money lawsuit.Things get worse when his best buddy Dean (Ben Affleck) gives him drugs that impairs his judgment and he agrees to hire a gigolo to sleep with his wife to find out if she really is cheating on him.The film is written and directed by Mike Judge (creator of Beavis & Butt-Head) but it lacks a wild anarchic streak. It is simply amiable as Bateman is master in playing the harassed straight guy who life is on the verge of falling apart. However some of it just does not get anywhere. Why does his wife Suzie get the hots for the dim gigolo? Wiig is wasted, she tries to explain to Bateman why she avoided having sex with him but the director has lost interest and moves away from the subject. When the factory is at risk because of the impending lawsuit, you think surely the insurers would be dealing with this? The film lacks big laughs, it goes for awkward characterisation but it does not really work.
FilmBuff1994 Extract is a decent movie with a reasonably well written storyline and a terrific comedic cast. It's a very enjoyable film in which most of its flaws are forgotten by the fact that it is simple fun, the cast all shine in their roles, with the likes of Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig and J.K. Simmons all starring, but the highlight for me had to be Ben Affleck, a huge star that I was very surprised to see playing a supporting role in a Mike Judge comedy, he is hilarious in all of his scenes and it is nothing like what we've seen before from him. The films biggest flaw is that it simply had more potential than it delivers, a comedy written and directed by Mike Judge, the mind that brought us King of the Hill, Beavis and Butt-Head and Office Space, with a stellar comedic cast like this seemed like an easy success, but it simply dosen't live up to its expectations. A lot of the jokes are very lame, there's several scenes where the characters take drugs and it's funny fur a few minutes, but it just keeps going, I found Mila Kunis's role irritating, her dialogue with Bateman is very poorly written and her character didn't make me laugh once, there is a lot of well written jokes here, such as the scenes between Kristen Wiig and Dustin Milligan, but there's too many parts that are straight up dumb. Certainly has its moments but misses far too often, Extract is still worth the watch if you ever see it on television, but don't go out of your way to see it. A hapless factory boss's life crumbles after a workplace accident and his own marriage is in trouble. Best Performance: Ben Affleck
LeeRob7 I actually watched this movie by accident thinking it was another movie of a similar name, Extracted. What I found was a quaint, enjoyable movie with very likable characters. Set predominantly in a small factory centered around the owner, Joel (Jason Bateman), who seems to be having a mid-life crisis. The movie follows Joel, his wife, friends and employees on a series of life events that send his world into turmoil teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and separation. Bateman is excellent as the naive, dissatisfied lead with a brilliant supporting cast including Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig, J.K. Simmons and David Koechner most notably. Everyone in the movie holds their own adding something different to the pleasing blend of subtle comedy and realistic drama, making this a simple yet satisfying movie. Even Ben Affleck manages to entertain, something he has consistently failed to do for me since Pearl Harbour. Not mind-blowing or earth-shattering but quite unique in it's own, heartfelt way. 7/10
OJT I wasn't planning either to see this, or to review it, but I still both sat down watching if, and after that I frog I had to put down some words. It's starts off cozy enough, but then it gets very boring, and looks like it's going to be another stupid comedy with sexual explicit language and "fun" which I hard, because it's in too many of these Hollywood comedies, and that I find it boring. However, after the first half (I'm afraid it's almost that long before it gets interesting) it sucks you in. This is dud to good acting, and some great little roles, like agent Simmons as a lawyer.I finally got some greats laughs, and that makes me give this a 6/10. Better than most such comedies.
