Kmb_the_Nepali_reviewer No movie has been so unsettling for me. I don't know how I feel about this movie. I love it very very much. And at the same time, I equally hate it. The idea put behind this movie is good. You want to tell the story about a character, it's okay. Bruce Robertson is a very well written character and his story and whatever he does is compelling. We get a very good exposition of what he appears to be, what he actually is and what made him what he is and all of those back stories. You can see his love, you can definitely see his envy and anger, his desperation, etc. Whatever the character does is very well justified. And that's basically the main part of the storyline. Also, James McAvoy as Bruce Robertson - one of his greatest performances ever. He gives a life to the character ..... literally. This type of character isn't a new one, but I haven't seen such a character given so much of complexity and depth. As a dark psychological thriller-ish drama, the movie is good. But at the same time, it is filthy. As I said, the filthy parts justify the character and the story itself. But those parts, within themselves, feel very uncomfortable. Also, some of such scenes are quite unnecessarily elaborated. It focuses (sometimes) unnecessarily on nudity. Some of the short filthy clips could've been deleted. But again, if we choose to tell the story otherwise, will it work so well? I don't think so. There are a number of people who love this movie, for the similar reasons why I loved it. And a number of people hate it, due to it's filthiness. I don't really like the filthiness, but I love the overall story and appreciate that it has been told in the best way imaginable, in my opinion. So, I don't know how I feel about this. For the time being, I will give it a "B" and a "6.5/10". If I was supposed to say liked it, I would definitely give it an "A" and an "8.8/10" and if I was supposed to hate it, a "D" and a "3.9/10", probably. I watched it around three times or so. If I ever watch it again, I might be a little more sure.
sol- Intent on landing a much coveted promotion, a corrupt cop sets out to tarnish the reputation of his fellow officers he is competing against in this briskly paced and energetic if vulgar comedy set in modern day Scotland. James McAvoy is excellent in the lead role, playing the part with enough charm and charisma that he remains likable to the end, even when he does some pretty horrible things. Flawed as his character may be, he is a relatable human being throughout, always more interested in reconciling matters with his wife through the promotion as opposed to the pay raise. As the film progresses, we also see increasing snippets that reveal a fragile, fragmented psychology with Jim Broadbent highly memorable (if over-the-top) as a 'Clockwork Orange' style psychiatrist treating him in a series of dream sequences. The film nevertheless loses it way a little towards the end. There is a thought-provoking twist late in the piece, but it is spelled out through an overload of flashbacks. The movie additionally concludes on a sentimental note that goes completely against the grain of the tale until then. Generally speaking though, this is an awesome ride, only ever as outrageous as its protagonist's wild schemes to undermine his associates are. Irvine Welsh's dialogue often sparkles with wit and McAvoy is supported by a great cast including Eddie Marsan at his most milquetoast.
Sissy Taylor James McAvoy is awesome and is reason enough alone to watch this. Even when you don't understand what the characters are saying, McAvoy makes you not care. Joanne Froggatt and the rest of the cast are great, but really its James's movie. What an actor. You never really know what to expect with this movie, predictable it is not. It's the most deranged comedy I ever watched. Taking the bad-cop genre to the extreme, Filth lives up to its title and then some. For the first half-hour it's got a full-on energy followed by a complex plot. An alcoholic cop is having animal-themed hallucinations. The further the character goes to get his promotion the crazier things get on screen. Do not let the uptight middle of the road critics reviews fool you. While it isn't a movie you'll call your favorite, it's a wild ride and one I recommend taking. if you can stomach it.
dierregi Irvine Welsh hates Scotland and he convinced me never to set foot in his wretched country. As in Transpotting, the main character of the movie (based on Welsh's novel) is a Scottish paranoid drug addict, only this time he happens to be a policeman.Bruce is corrupted, depraved and ready to sink extremely low to get promoted. The rest of the crew he is competing against is not much better, so right from the start my question was "Why should I care?" Then came a massive dose of deja-vu: a repetition of most of the gags seen in Transpotting, only filthier. But the kiss of death is the total lack of dark humour. The only feature that can make this sort of product bearable is some fun, but this movie is totally unfunny and way OTT with its attempts to outdo the most outrageous scenes seen on screen until now.
