Python Hyena First Sunday (2008): Dir: David E. Talbert / Cast: Ice Cube, Tracey Morgan, Katt Williams, Chi McBride, Malinda Williams: Here is a comedy that is both very funny yet also shows sides of the Christian faith that are usually withheld due to the industry's intimidation of anything spiritual that may bare facts. It regards two cousins whom attend their first Sunday service with robbery in mind. Ice Cube plays a single father who loses his job and hopes not to lose his son. Tracey Morgan plays his cousin whom gets into trouble with a gang when he loses stolen wheelchairs. Desperate, they decide to rob a Church. Director David E. Talbert brings some positive themes to this otherwise formula story. Cube brings a longing for his son and a realization that God sees everything. Morgan delivers many laughs in his constant screw-ups but learns a thing or two about Christian charity and love. Katt Williams steals scenes as a choir conductor even though without him the role might have sunk into conventions. Chi McBride as the Pastor brings authority and the ability to use alternative thinking in dealing with this dilemma. Malinda Williams plays what appears to be a romantic interest. She is a member of the church and attempts to reason with Ice Cube during dealings with an air conditioner. The result is a well made comedy with a joyous message of forgiveness and whom can be the bigger criminals. Score: 8 ½ / 10
danceability-1 For all of you bad critics.I've been looking at the comments people make on movies such as "Dough Boys" and "Never Die Alone" and all I have to say to the bad critics is a few comments. Most of you who rate these movies based on it's cinematic beauty and character, never take the time to view it for what it was meant. These movies are all great in my book, one being because they are things that I have seen since I was 8 years old and still see today, so I can relate to them. Which is what they are, stories that are told for the enjoyment of people who can relate to them and to show those who cannot, the reality that these characters lived in relation to real life situations. But since we have a lot of people who were born with silver spoons in their mouth trying to make their voices be the base of the percussion line, they can and will never see it that way. Every time they watch a movie their looking at the camera detail, the acting to be 10 stars, the story to be about white houses with picket fences and a happy ending under a rainbow, while we who relate to the story always think the movie was great because it speaks for us, it lets everyone who see's it know that these things do happen, regardless of it's budget and cinematography. So to all you bad movie critics, My advice to you is to stop watching these movies that you cannot relate to, or just stop being a critic and just keep it to yourself.Amsterdam, Holland
Matthew Stebel I was on my way to see Sweeney Todd but when I got to the theater,I had missed the show time. Instead of waiting for two hours, I decided to go with First Sunday, whose commercial were semi-funny. I sat in the theater for an hour and a half with an expression of solid boredom. This was a sad, sad excuse for a movie. I had better hopes for Ice Cube but he fell short. The only funny moments were of Katt Williams, and those few moments were featured on the commercials. I am not a bigot. According to the previous comment, I am. Sorry but I call it like I see it, and that was stupid stupid movie. I had to sit with a large group of individuals who, like me, obviously hated the film. None of my watch-mates laughed during the film and neither did I. It makes me quite sad to see what comedy has come to these days. I remember the days when a comedic film would have me in fits of laughter. What is the film world going to.
joemamaohio "First Sunday" is a film about two down-and-out gentlemen living in the hoods of Baltimore. They've been to court several times, and the one is about to lose his son because he can't provide alimony for him. Then they come up with a totally hair-brained scheme...rob a church. So they do, but in the process they discover that someone else already robbed it, so they hold the congregation hostage until someone confesses to the crime. The humor in the film is lacking, but the heart is clearly visible. You feel for these criminals, and as their hostage standoff prolongs, they begin to realize what type of people they really are, and learn a valuable lesson in forgiveness."First Sunday" is a good, heartfelt comedy that delivers the laughs and the compassion.
