Uriah43 After catching a glimpse of his father being killed "Malo" (Curtis Jackson) decides to follow in his footsteps and become a police officer too. As soon as he graduates from the police academy an old friend of his father by the name of "Joe Sarcone" (Robert De Niro) reaches out to him and offers him a position within his precinct under the condition that he fully participates in the corruption that Joe Sarcone oversees. Malo willingly agrees and gets his two childhood friends who graduated with him to join as well. In no time he and his friends become even worse than the criminals on the street. Now rather than reveal any more of this movie and risk spoiling it for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this film left me somewhat disappointed. The main reason was that it lacked realism. Big time. Likewise, some of the actors just didn't seem to fit their character assignments. In any case, I suppose it was an okay movie but quite frankly I have a hard time rating it any higher than average.
namashi_1 'Freelancers' is a so-so fare, that has some merit, but it isn't fully loaded either. 'Freelancers' Synopsis: The son of a slain NYPD officer joins the force, where he falls in with his father's former partner and a team of rogue cops.'Freelancers' rests on a clichéd plot. The ever-lasting tale of of an honest cop & his battle with corrupt cops/gangsters/thief's has been depicted on the big screen an umpteen number of times. So in terms of novelty, 'Freelancers' has none of it. However, a few dramatic moments are skillfully executed, which certainly deserve a mention.L. Philippe Casseus's Screenplay is average. Jessy Terrero's Direction is decent. Action-Sequences are nicely executed. Performance-Wise: 50 Cent makes a sincere attempt to justify his part. De Niro is in his element. Forest Whitaker doesn't get much scope. On the whole, 'Freelancers' is an okay watch.
TdSmth5 One Curtis Jackson and his giant teeth play Malo, a rookie cop who just graduated from police academy. Also graduating are his two childhood friends, one black the other white. The black one is assigned another black cop to be his training officer, a good guy trying to help his community. The white guy is assigned a white racist cop as his TO. The reason to mention this is because initially the movie makes a big fuzz about race.Malo is immediately invited by a veteran corrupt cop played by De Niro to his corrupt squad that dedicates itself to stealing money and drug and reselling them. It's Malo's birthright to join the squad because his dad was also cop and part of this corrupt unit that has connection up to the mayor's office. Malo joins and is assigned Forest Whitaker as his TO, who plays a drug addicted version of The Shield's Vic Mackey. At first Malo goes along with things and even tries to get his two friends to be invited to join. But eventually he learns a lot more about the unit and his dad. His dad as it turns out was informing on De Niro and the group and that cost him his life. He was basically executed by De Niro in front of little Malo. So now Malo has another reason to be in the squad and learn all the dirty secrets including info on De Niro's boss, some guy named Baez. All this sounds exciting and it actually is, for the first hour. Then Malo devises and executes his plan to avenge his father's death. Unfortunately the last 30 minutes are somewhat of a mess, when that should be even more interesting than the beginning. The whole issue of race and some of the other characters are dropped completely. Too much focus is placed on Malo's love life and womanizing ways. There's more to the female characters as well. But as with Malo's friends important scenes that would make things more interesting ended up in the deleted scenes section. The story is good and you want to know what happens, but the direction and editing are weak. They butchered the story unnecessarily. Performances are good by De Niro, Whitaker, Gerald. Anabelle Acosta and Beau Garrett are lovely but we learn more about the characters in deleted scenes than in the movie. The lead character though is unconvincing and the performance by this "actor" poor, he also produced the movie so it looks like it's a vanity project more than anything else. A movie like this needs a more charismatic lead. Freelancers could have been a decent movie about corrupt cops but direction, editing, and acting ruined it.
radhrh In a clash of the Stella thespian talents that are Vinnie Jones and 50 Cent, Vinnie comes out with top acting honours. At the Oscars after party Vinnie, still clutching his golden statue said, " Its been a long time coming, but at last my 'ard work and talents has been recognised by The Academy" he went on to have high praise for his co-star " Yeah, 50 Cent is a diamond geezer, I knew I 'ad to be on top form to even be on set with a guy like him" He was less generous with two of his other co-stars however " I was well disappointed with that De Niro bloke and whatsisname, that Forest geezer. Complete Muppets the pair of 'em" So what is next for the Vinster? Was there any truth in the rumour he and 50 cent were going to cut an album together? "I fink I got sumit to tell to the yoofs of today" he commented. Meanwhile I asked a disappointed 50 Cent if he had any movies in the pipeline " 'might 'av a part in dis seminal short. Its set in a fast food joint and my agent says it "condenses contemporary urban angst into an ostensibly glossy 30 seconds of intense action" He continued " And I've got a speaking part, I say "I'm loving it!"" In a rare moment of self doubt 50 Cent added "But it might be a bit of a stretch for me"
