I hadn't even heard of this movie before I stumbled upon a Blu-ray copy of it at my local library. Ultimately I decided to give it a chance, seeing that Ed Harris (an underrated actor) was in it. It turned out to be a really good movie. There are a number of interesting things about it, one of them being that it gives a balanced look at every type of character you can think of. You see good and bad things about illegal immigrants, border patrol policemen, and American citizens. This balanced portrayal shows (correctly) that the issue of illegal immigrants isn't a black or white situation - it's a complicated issue. While this may sound like the movie is preachy or long winded, it isn't. Although the movie is a little slow, there is always a good deal of interest in every scene - there are no boring moments. Harris, as expected, it really good, but everyone else in the cast (especially Michael Pena, Amy Madigan, and Eve Longoria) is solid as well. It's a real shame that this movie didn't get much publicity or much of a theatrical release. Hopefully it will be rediscovered by a receptive audience in the near future.

For most, I don't know if the story will warrant the high score that I give it but for me it does. Its very relevant to the times.The struggle with what is right, what you could just let happen (wrong) and the crime story behind it all is very interesting to me.The old sheriff is true to his morals. He pursues the story to its end. I am not sure if Ed Harris is my favorite, but he is good in this. Michael P is just great. Some of the film is almost too hard to watch. The struggles of folks represented are just awful. Something to keep in mind when topics about these folks come up.

Two Mexicans trying to cross the border are implicated in a murder they didn't commit. The film follows the fallout as the dead woman's husband pieces together the mystery of who was responsible for her murder. This is an excellently played and filmed modern day western drama which thankfully steers clear of many of the obvious clichés and is never predictable. The intelligent script sparkles and is helped by a superb cast led by Ed Harris, Michael Pena and Eva Longeria all of whom put in superb performances. The ending for me was a little rushed and disappointing and therefore it just falls short of a great movie in my opinion. This is just a personal opinion though and for others it may work out fine. Frontera is a good addition to the modern western genre and well worth watching.

Frontera is an intense story about an illegal immigrant wrongly accused in the death of a woman. The movie shows the journey of one man to find work in the US and shows some of the pitfalls of illegal immigration from the immigrant's perspective, including how coyotes, and sometimes Border Patrol personnel, may take advantage of these desperate people as well. This story also portrays how law enforcement may rush to judgment without investigating all the facts. Ed Harris plays the husband of the deceased woman and as a retired deputy, is determined to find the facts surrounding his wife's death. Michael Pena is outstanding as the accused. While depressing at times to watch, the story is realistic and an excellent story to experience.
