jessica_dabrosca I too was introduced to this movie when I was about 7 or 8 and instantly fell in love with this tale of love, loss and sacrifice and consequence. I have not seen this movie since I was young and have been on a quest to find if it is still available for purchase ever since (the world wide web has helped very much). I would like my children to experience this movie in its original form as Hans Christianson Anderson meant it to be told.Like other comments I've read, I too was disappointed with the Disney version of this tale, but not surprised. To all of you who loved Marina and Fritz over Ariel and Sebastein, you will love The Last Unicorn...then again, you may have already seen it way back when.
dulce_sirenita_ I think this is a very beautiful film about love risking and live for love... It is a great version of Hans Christian Tale.. Is a sad story but well, the original story was like that. You can't be expecting a happy ending. But I definitely like it. Marina is a beautiful and sweet mermaid, I love how they draw her because she's very cute. Many people don't like the drawings and animation, but it was a 70s movie and for me it looks great. Also I'm so into vintage stuff and I love oldies. I know that they show nudity in this film and is not for children, is for young adults and all that appreciate anime classics. This movie makes me cry because it gives so much impact and a beautiful message of love. The people that don't like this film, definitely don't appreciate old anime and didn't know that the real true story has a sad ending. I would love to see this film again on DVD someday because now is out of stock.
lajarboe I would like to defend this movie as user Josephine left a very angry review. I'm sorry if you saw this as a small child and are forever traumatized but your review is very incomplete, not to mention the you speak of things that were never in the movie including saying that the prince "marries another prostitute" the mermaid drowns herself, and that there is beheading in the film. I don't really understand why you would lie about what happens in a movie on the review. Perhaps you just really hate this movie..anger issues? This movie is early anime. It is not bad anime, the animation simply is not as complex as the animation we see today, after all, the movie was made in 1975. The movie is definitely for older children, I saw it as a little girl when I was five and loved it, however it is important to realize that the end is very tragic. It can be very upsetting for young or sensitive children. There is no happily ever after, nor was there in the original story by Hans Christian Anderson. The movie begins very much in the way a child's movie would..juvenile dialogue, etc. but takes a rather tragic and serious turn. Understand that anime tends to be very different from Disney. It is not the happy, fictionalized fiction you would see in Disney's Little Mermaid or Aladdin. Clearly, many like this movie, as it is always selling on eBay, sometimes at rather high bids. There was something about this movie that I loved as a little girl, and still do. I can't clearly define what it is. Perhaps it was refreshing to see something so different. It could be a little cheesy at times, but all children's movies are to a degree. I enjoyed it, many of my friends enjoyed it, I certainly would not recommend renting it for your Friday night dinner and a movie. But is it worth seeing? I think so. It depends on what you are looking for.
PrincessSerena25 I want my son to understand that everything does NOT always turn out perfect in life. This movie will teach him and our future children that not everything in life is perfect, and that love is a very important thing. It also teaches children that you can't have everything you want in life. Sometimes you have to just leave it alone, and it also teaches about sacrifice. Instead of being selfish a person can decide give of himself or herself instead of doing whatever it takes to get what they want. This movie has many values. Also, if a child's parents are splitting up this is a good movie to see, because it shows that things don't always work out. Values aside, this movie is beautiful. The animation is simply lovely. A green aphro? She didn't have a green aphro. Her hair is pulled back if you notice, and what is wrong with the girls having different hair color? Nothing. It teaches tolerance and shows that a person of any color can be beautiful. The scenery is lovely, the palace is a little less extravagant than the one in the Disney version, but at least this company didn't put a picture of a dildo stuck into the castle on the cover. *Rolls eyes* I can show you the picture of the video if you would like that was recalled, because we never sent ours in and still have the original cover. And yes, they DID put a dildo into the castle. The people who made this movie were a lot more professional than the ones who made the Disney version. That being said, I must talk a little bit about the fact that this is the original Hans Christian Anderson story, and not some terrible attempt at completely changing the story line. Hans Christian Anderson would be proud of this movie, whereas the Disney version probably made him turn over in his grave. Overall a wonderful movie. They are now starting to sell it on DVD and I can't wait to get my copy on DVD. We have a copy on video but it is a little warn out and has some sound and picture glitches, nothing big but still we would like a perfect one and we copied the entire movie onto the computer so we can get some still shots.
