OK, so, I'm poking fun at Josh Radnor and his alter ego, Ted Mosby of HIMYM fame. But, that's kind of the point. This movie does feel like an extended episode of HIMYM, but with only one male member of the "main cast". It's like Ted Mosby wanted to "really be the main character", not simply a "story telling device". :)So, don't expect the HIMYM type of comedy, as we don't have Barney Stinson nor Marshmallow, this movie's Lillypad is not a criminal mastermind and this movie's Robin is like the Robin of the first few episodes of HIMYM (before the guns, "Let's go to the mall" and stuff).If you forget HIMYM, on its own, the movie is nice, funny and pretty naive, with a very positive "message". Which should not come as a surprise as Josh Radnor is the writer, director and main actor.Don't expect many "great" jokes, but, there are quite a few good ones and the movie as a whole feels funny, which is more than most modern comedies achieve.

Josh Radnor is a lot like his character in HIMYM I think, I mean he seems to love New York as his setting, he likes the arts, Music, Imagery, Lighting and Emotions. All of his passions (or what I think is his passions), seem to blend great into this film and really make a nice and sweet film, maybe a bit of a strange film and plot, but the storytelling really works and I was entertained.This is a easy passed comedy, maybe even a Romantic Comedy, but with more Comedy then Romance. It has a handful of different locations, but centers New York and is kind of rough in its expression, but very likable and witty and charming.I enjoyed this very very much, it is a simple tale, a good story, realistic characters and just fun in many ways.

Sam Wexler (Josh Radnor) is a story writer living in NYC. One day on the subway, he finds little Rasheen who lost his foster mom. He's not eager to go back and Sam is in a rush to a job interview. Then he takes him to his friend Annie (Malin Akerman)'s party. Annie is suffering from alopecia and hounded by an annoying co-worker Sam #2 (Tony Hale). Her sometimes mantra is "Thank You! More Please." Friend Mary Catherine (Zoe Kazan) is also at the party whose boyfriend Charlie (Pablo Schreiber) wants to move to L.A. for a job opportunity but she doesn't. Sam #1 is infatuated with waitress Mississippi (Kate Mara).I want to like this more. The characters are indie-quirky and likable enough. However, a couple of little things keep bothering me about this movie. First the truly minor thing is that the kid should be cuter. Don't get me wrong. The kid is cute but he really should be cuter. Second, I kept thinking that this is kidnapping. The movie would work fine if he just kept the kid overnight. The longer he stayed, the more unreal the movie became. It got to be so ridiculous that the other characters are annoyed at him. Finally, the characters need more connections. They don't work together and they aren't roommates. The stories just feel a little bit separated. It would be better for them to be connected and therefore have more easy meetings together. Overall, there are some funny moments and some nice indie moments. I'm just bothered by the unintentional kidnapping.

I watched this movie without knowing that Josh Radnor was involved in the direction and the script.Josh's character is a writer that has had a moderate success with short novels but struggle to write longer stories. This courageous auto-critic of the author is a warning about what is about to follow.This film is constructed with 3 parallel stories with little to tie them together. There is a friendship between the characters but it feels like a glue more than something that helps to develop the plot. Then there is about 6 irritating music montage that try to smooth the angles between scenes. It feels more like the writer struggled to put the story together so he filled it up with some cool music and images.As much as I wanted to care about the characters, I couldn't do it because they keep doing stupid choice about their life: Rosh should just go prison for abducting a child. The bald girl shouldn't hook up with stupid ex or go out with the obsessive stalker (the movie ends before she get sacrificed in a weird satanic ritual) and the couple should just break up because they are annoying.On the positive side, there is a few good shots, a few interesting dialogs. But it will not save you from boredom.
