slightlymad22 Continuing my plan to watch every Eddie Murphy movie in order, I come to Life (1999) Plot In A Paragraph: In 1932, two strangers (Murphy and Lawrence) are wrongfully convicted and develop a strong friendship in prison that lasts them through the 20th century. This is the last movie starring Eddie Murphy, that I chose to go see at the cinema!! That is not counting voice work, I went to see with my kids. This reteams Murphy with his Boomerang costar, Martin Lawrence. 7 years ago, Murphy was a huge star, and Murphy was relatively unknown. Now they were on an equal footing. Ned Beatty (Deliverance) has a small but important role. I enjoy this movie, and consider it to be under rated. I usually watch this every couple of years. Murphy and Lawrence had genuine chemistry and some out takes and ad libs are actually in the movie. I think this is probably Murphy's last good comedy!! It's not a laugh riot, but it's a seriously touching movie. Probably in my Top 10 Murphy movies.Life grossed $63 million at the domestic box office, to end the year the 34th highest grossing movie of the year.
sol- Sentenced to life in prison after they are wrongfully convicted of murder, two would-be bootleggers gain popularity among their inmates for their repeated escape attempts in this lively comedy. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence bounce well off one another in the main roles with a friendship that gets worn and tested throughout. The real fun of the film only begins though after the one-hour mark with the film fast-forwarding several decades to focus on Murphy and Lawrence as old men, still sticking it to the same warden (played by Nick Cassavetes) and still as youthful as ever when it comes to plotting escapes and egging one another on. The makeup effects to age Murphy, Lawrence and Cassavetes are nothing short of remarkable too and were deservedly nominated for an Academy Award at the time. That said, the first hour of the film is not without merit. There is a highly memorable "I am Spartacus!" parody as a governor tries to work out which inmate has fathered his daughter's baby and a darkly comical letter-from-home reading session. Some of the initial scenes (before they are imprisoned) work well too, with a special mention to a scene in which the duo unsuccessfully try to purchase a pie. And yet, there is little denying that the final third of the film is by far the juiciest section, topped off with an ending that is hard to forget. For a laugh-out-loud and totally enthralling Eddie Murphy comedy, 'Bowfinger' is a safer better, but this other 1999 effort from the Oscar nominated star is not half-bad, even if it only achieves greatness towards the end.
ajengle-07055 The headline of the movie is "Life" and it gets your attention by making you curious and the fact its a comedy called life. The movie genre of this movie is a comedy. In the movie " Life" Rayford Gibson (Eddie Murphy) and Claude Banks ( Martin Lawrence) accidentally get teamed up trying to pay Rays debt and recover Claude's reputation traveling south to pay a man some of the finest booze in the Mississippi to make some cash and end up with a horrible misfortune ended up sending them to jail for life on a false accusation of murder. There are only two main characters of the movie and they are Claude Banks and Rayford Gibson, this story takes place in Mississippi 1945 with some conflict between the two due to the fact both characters were blamed for murder while being innocent. The actors performed as if they were in that exact position, constantly blaming each other for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.I feel the director of the movie did a great job, this is a movie i can't get tired of! I love this movie, just everything about it flows together so well, the setting, time, place, and the actors did a great job about keeping in role. A lesson learned in this movie is that you can't blame everyone for your wrongs too, you had a decision to be there or not and you took it, another lesson learned is that be careful where you go because there's always a chance you could end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. This movie is intended for the people and the ones who love to laugh or just need a good laugh every once in awhile, this would be the perfect movie. I feel the right rating on this movie would be anywhere between four and five stars. The movie flowed well and the director just did a great job with the chosen actors and the setting in time.
Python Hyena Life (1999): Dir: Ted Demme / Cast: Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, R. Lee Ermey, Poppy Montgomery, Ned Beatty: Well crafted comedy about friendship and companionship with very serious undertones. Title indicates both imprisonment and friendship that opens in 1932 Harlem. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence meet by chance and are assigned to transport illegal booze. One fatal stop results in imprisonment for a murder they never committed. They spend a long 40 years in prison and for a comedy this is quite depressing especially when it references the prisoners who died during this period. There are many interesting moments that test their stability. Director Ted Demme gives a sense of isolation in a film that is quite different from his previous film Beautiful Girls. Convincing makeup demonstrates the ageing process. Both Murphy and Lawrence share a wonderful chemistry that endures until the injustice is faced. The ending is clever and justified when considering the plot problem. R. Lee Ermey plays the Sheriff who frames them and will resurface later when he is confronted and revealed. Poppy Montgomery plays a flamboyant visiting daughter subjected to sex. Ned Beatty plays a superintendent whom Murphy and Lawrence at an elderly age work for. Beatty will ultimately learn the truth and work to reverse the damages. It regards time and friendship as key elements in living life. Score: 9 / 10
