cinemajesty One of Sundance Film Festivals favorite director Drake Doremus, involved in sharing first looks of his picture since January 22nd 2010 with the tragic-comedy "Douchebag" before striking a notch the year after with "Like Crazy" under participation of well-involved cast from actress Fecility Jones as Anna, already-deceased-with-age-27 actor Anton Yelchin (1989-2016) as Jacob and over-flying actress Jennifer Lawrence as Sam with approximately no more than 10 Minutes screen-time in an unchallenged role of some pleasures but insignificant for this Sundance Lab co-produced drama on a GB/US couple, portrayed by Yelchin & Jones going through the struggle of a generation on the verge of slipping to annihilation. The utterly uninspired cinematography, designed to be shot by Drake Doremus faithful collaborator the lighting cameraman John Guleserian, which as far as I can see from here improved his skills in "Equals" (2015), which had been a misfire for the director at the Venice Film Festival on September 5th 2015 to enter an internationally relative stage; further chosen set pieces in painstaking-ordinary production design towards a simple replication of common life of young adults in their 20s, who find love, lose it, twist it, change it and find it again, if to say nothing short as an unfocused picture, which only potential, I would not strength, could have been to push the actors out of their comfort zone under a cold water shower before sunrise at 4:45AM every given shooting day. Drake Doremus does not do anything like that to awake his cast out of their hush-hush love-you, hate-you, love-you-again-mode, which may be close to life itself in one world, but unfortunately the approach does not work for a cinematic experience, instead warmed-up food from the Lab's microwave.Nevertheless some scenes of "Like Crazy" show the cast's initial will to fulfill their mission of coming full circle with the roles given, supporting the director Drake Doremus to at least be able to finish his picture, which worked out for the director for quite some time in the past. On January 25th 2017, Drake Doremus presented his fourth picture in seven years at the Sundance Film Festival. A film called "Newness" on people in their 20s and early 30s, who define their relationships over media-striking hookup devices. It becomes clear to me after watching "Like Crazy" and without having seen Drake Doremus' complete filmography, that the director has become somehow tiresome with his own subject matter on explaining, but not being able to visualize the struggle of generation, which seems to have everything and nothing in a split of a second; a nerve-wrecking state which drives the majority to settle with the smallest piece of splendor they are given; in Drake Doremus' case, a constant production crew without questioning nor challenging himself, what lies beyond of a hammer-splintered cellphone, a stolen car and to second Monsieur Jean-Luc Godard's approach of dramatic tension in relationships of the opposite sexes "A Gun".© 2017 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)
writeguyr "Like Crazy & Stupid Love"SPOILER ALERTThe film is basically a transcontinental love affair, she Anna from England, he Jacob from the USA and L.A. Anna visiting the USA on a student visa meets and falls in love with Jacob while she's in L.A. The two are drawn closer, dating, spending more and more time together. Until Anna is forced to leave the USA because of a student visa violation for overstaying her visit in the USA. The two lovers torn apart separated by an ocean, text and talk to each other, telling each other how much each misses the other. Jacob visits Anna in England and the two realize that the travelling back and forth would prove to be very costly for the young lovers. The two despondent try to cope and go about their lives. Jacob has found a new love interest with his gorgeous new employee.Enter Jennifer Lawrence as Samantha. Never have I seen such a gorgeous and welcomed entrance by an actress. Her long blonde hair glorious curvaceous figure and her charismatic personality just demonstrates even this early in Jennifer's career why she is a superstar actress. Jacob enjoys the company of his new love interest Samantha, she is more fun filled than Anna. I like many other males watching this film fantasize about being with the hot sizzling Jennifer Lawrence as Samantha. I know my heart beat picked up and my eyes enjoyed the pleasure of seeing Samantha. We see Jacob and Samantha at a nightclub partying and having a great time. Suddenly while on the dance floor Jacob receives multiple texts from Anna in England for him to call her. This is where Anna starts acting crazy and Jacob starts to get stupid. Now while Anna is kind of cute, Samantha is sizzling Hot!! 99.9% of guys would pick Samantha over Anna. So Jacob answers the call, Samantha suspects that Anna is about steal her guy from her. While Anna is selfish and possessive, Samantha is forgiving and understanding along with being far more beautiful than Anna.Jacob makes hits first stupid idiotic move, he lives Samantha and travels to England to be reunited with Anna. Anna corrals Jacob into marrying her believing that it would open the door for the two to return to the USA. Not happening! The ban on her travel is still in effect because of her student visa violation. Now the two are stuck at a crossroad situation. How do they make their marriage work? The stress of their dream plan faltering brings out the anger suppressed within the two. Anna and Jacob both have careers in different countries. The stress brings about a screaming argument between the two. Jacob leaves Anna and returns to L.A. and a forgiving Samantha. Wow what a woman! Now at the same time Anna begins dating a young Brit named Simon. They have a close loving relationship to the point where Simon proposes to Anna. Anna plays it cool and doesn't accept his proposal. OK now back to L.A. Jacob is in bed with the sexy gorgeous Samantha, while she sleeps Jacob receives a text from guess who? Anna, she texts "I miss you" The stupid Jacob upon learning that Anna has the travel ban lifted agrees to go back to her.Upon Anna's return to L.A. her meeting with Jacob is sort of awkward and not as passionate and fun filled relationship that Jacob had with Samantha. Right away Anna complains about not being able to find a job like the great job she gave up in England. The two seem to be lovers who have career issues that interfere with their romantic lives. This uneasy compromise by Anna being in L.A. one could see is not going to work out. Will Samantha be waiting on the sidelines ready to comeback to Jacob? Word of advice for Anna STAY IN ENGLND!! Leave Jacob alone so he can find real happiness with Samantha! The eight stars I give all of them to the fabulous young Jennifer Lawrence appearing as Samantha!
cuthbertjoel I have read a number of reviews on this film and I can definitely identify with the ones that mention both leads (Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin) are brilliant separately, but something goes missing when they are together.I really enjoyed the subject matter of the film. This is a young couple in love who are trying to deal with the sorts of problems that everyday couples have. Their issues are not glamourised and that is echoed by the minimalism in the script. I enjoyed the celebration of the mundane, which really allowed me to connect with the story. The issue I have with the film, though, is that I didn't really buy these two as a couple. The chemistry really wasn't there for me. As I said before, Jones and Yelchin put in solid performances with a nice cameo from Jennifer Lawrence, but I didn't feel the connection between the two. I didn't believe that these two were desperate to be with each other and that they were going through the torment of that not being able to happen. The film had enough emotion to pull on the heartstrings. I just think with these two characters, I felt a certain amount of detachment which translated into not feeling as emotionally connected to the characters as the film probably intended.
alysgeorge Like Crazy was a real breath of fresh air, I felt a real connection with the characters and I'm sure so did a lot of others. You followed the journey from meeting Anna and Jacob in L.A at University, falling in love, being torn apart and stopped from being together, and there long journey to finding happiness. What I liked most about this film, was the characters really allowing you to connect with them. You experience the longing and hurt, the struggle between two people so far away.My favourite scene of the whole film is the last, when they just stand there not saying anything but hold each other. It's as if the struggle has come to an end, and now they can just be happy. Begin there life together, I will be surprised if you don't cry at at least one part in this film.Simply beautiful and by far my favourite film by Felicity Jones.
