barlowralph Like Father could have been a great movie. It's a beautiful, heart-tugging story, and for the most part wonderfully acted, particularly by the two leads, Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer; but the writers opted to include a lot of gratuitous foul language, which knocked 3 stars off my rating. It seems to me that when writers stoop to using that kind of language, they are just going for shock value; it's much more of a challenge to write dialogue that grabs the viewer without the unnecessary use of profanity. (One excellent example of what I'm talking about is the movie "The Magic of Belle Isle," with Morgan Freeman.)The characters in this story are educated, civilized people. To make them sound like gutter trash is uncalled for. Come on, writers! THINK a little bit when you're writing this stuff. Be clever, not lowbrow.
VenerableBean Netflix lays some grand old turds, and this is one of them. Stinks to high heavens. Skip it and flush it. Turd brown
Greatlastname Don't belive the haters, good acting from all. The story is sweet, funny and about the important things in life... family. Worth a watch.
esweet-154-191260 This is a great light hearted and dramatic movie. Kelsey is great, Kristen Bell plays a serious role well and Seth's slightly more than a cameo is perfect given how much he begged his wife, director/co-writer/screenplay Lauren Miller Rogan for the part. It's a safe storyline that, although serious, somehow manages to carry you over the rough emotional bits and deliver you back to your sofa content and happy. Star power certainly helps it, the story could be entirely retold as a seriously powerful drama, yet it's lovely as it is. Trivia, Kelsey's and Bell's winning strategy is based identically on an actual winning strategy that Seth's own Dad had devised and then subsequently coached Seth and his real life sister to implement and win a Canadian TV game show when they were kids.
