robota Was I supposed to laugh? I didn't. Was I supposed to feel something for any character? I didn't. Was I supposed to be watching a movie? It can't be! Wow. Only got half the way through, but I couldn't take anymore. This kind of dreck is driving down the price of big screen TVs, because people don't want to blow an evening and money going to the theater for something this bad.
TxMike This is a mostly silly comedy which has some funny parts but is uneven at best. The summary is what Jeffrey says about one of his imaginary girlfriends whom he says was his 'first' in the smelly basement of the school. (Only in the deleted scenes on the DVD.)I only saw this movie because it has Anna Faris in it. I am a big fan of hers and am trying to see all her movies. In fact she is the best thing here, in a supporting role. Her character is the only fairly normal one who always is genuine and always tells the truth. Overall I would be hesitant to recommend this movie to a friend.Jon Heder ('Napoleon Dynamite') is Jeffrey Mannus , traumatized young when his dad died in an auto accident. In present time he is not 29 and still living at home. He is an amateur astronomer and mom has told him he can stay there until he makes his first 'discovery.'His mom is Diane Keaton as Jan Mannus . She has had much of a social life since her husband died and a friend is encouraging her to do something, maybe speak to the motivational speaker after a session, maybe ask him a question, maybe it will spark something. The motivational speaker is Jeff Daniels as Mert Rosenbloom . It turns out he also has a Jazz group and invites her to their Friday night jam session. Later we find out he fell in love with her the moment he first saw her.So mom and Mert start dating, Jeffrey is threatened and does everything he can to break it up. Much of it is very silly. Jeffrey's biggest problem is that he refuses to grow up, and is just an expensive slacker at the book store where he works.Anna Faris is Nora who works at a restaurant but is an aspiring singer. For some reason that makes little sense she is attracted to Jeffrey, but he is a man-boy in adult clothes.I also enjoyed Eli Wallach as family friend Seymour Warburton , and it is at his book store that Jeffrey works.
uncre8tv Jeff Daniels does his usual respectable job, Keaton mostly keeps the hysterics at bay, Anna Farris adds some dimension to her standard stoner chick, and Heder tries his best to not delve too deep into the Napoleon Dynamite well. Sarah Chalke is always a nice addition to any cast too. This is a decent indy movie, not great but far better than the 4.9 here. It was a victim of its marketing as much as anything. The story starts strong and finds a reasonable resolution without resorting to slapstick or painfully implausible plot twists. The cinematography was better than average - there's a great shot of Keaton framed by kitchen cabinets early on, and the lighting/exposure and set design are reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine. Well worth picking up as a weekend rental or throwing in the online queue for some light viewing.
jparker_1992 I thought this was an excellent movie. There is lots of potential from the big names in this film (Eli Wallach what an actor). Jeff Daniels though played his role terribly. Some say it is a bit of a copy of Failure To Launch and Mr Woodcock. Failure To Launch is a romantic comedy and Mr Woodcock is crap. This is so much better. It also seems to aimed at an older audience then just teenagers. I think for Tim Hamilton's first directing job it is excellentIts just disappointing that Warner Bros. have pushed this film out of the limelight. It is quite a good film and better then most in the "teenage" genre.8/10
