Reviews

areatw I think some of the other reviews of 'Meet Dave' are a bit harsh. This is by no means a laugh out loud comedy movie, but the concept isn't bad and it is, at least for a while, quite amusing. The problem is that this is a one joke comedy, and the joke starts to wear thin after a while. The first half an hour or so is the best part, mainly because the plot is somewhat interesting to begin with.It doesn't take long to run out of ideas though, and when it does, the film goes downhill fast. Eddie Murphy is a funny guy and he does provide the odd funny moment, but these are too few and far between and most of the attempted jokes fall flat. That said, I sat through it all the way to the end and felt like I had been entertained, so it can't have been that bad.
Python Hyena Meet Dave (2008): Dir: Brian Robbins / Cast: Eddie Murphy, Elizabeth Banks, Gabrielle Union, Scott Caan, Ed Helms: Meet one of the worst pieces of cinematic junk of the year. If one can predict right, it will likely meet total silence from those who celebrated its stars earlier successes. It regards contact between two factors but unfortunately those factors didn't include this film meeting a sledge hammer. A spaceship in the form of Eddie Murphy lands on earth and is operated by little people including a captain that resembles him. Once their human ship is struck by a car he is befriended by a young woman and her son. Director Brian Robbins met success with Varsity Blues but since then he has made crap such as Hardball and Ready to Rumble. The special effects here are on par with the state's worst student science projects. Easily one of Murphy's worst performances as he once again proves that the whole multiple role thing should have been left with The Nutty Professor. Elizabeth Banks is wasted as the mom whom almost wraps her car around him. Gabrielle Union plays #3 because apparently Murphy already sabotaged #1 and #2. Scott Caan plays a cop who investigates the site where Dave crash landed. Perhaps he should have investigated those whom green lit this project. This film should crash land then be buried so that no one will have to endure it again. Score: 1 / 10
FlashCallahan A spaceship shaped like a human lands face first on Liberty Island. Its crew is looking for an orb sent from its planet to extract the oceans' salt, which will ruin Earth. The orb is in the possession of Josh, the fifth-grade son of a single mom whose car strikes the alien spaceship and cripples its power supply. The crew have 48 hours to recover the orb, throw it in the Atlantic, and leave Earth. Over the course of two days, the ship's crew experiences chaos and emotion in New York....So the story doesn't really add up to much, but the amount of physical comedy he does here is brilliant, and shows that he doesn't have to play multiple characters to get the laughs. But at the time when this was released (and still now, everything that Murphy released was panned globally, and flopped like nobodies business. But luckily, I have my own brain, and don't jump on the bandwagon, so I enjoyed for what it is, a silly kids film with plenty of things to smile at, even though I only laughed once.So it won't garner Murphy any new fans, but please, it's really quite endearing if you watch it without the criticism.
Dick - Saw this movie on television just lately and found it quite funny and original, with Star Trek references and more. It is amazing that the major part of the 'Hated it' reviews' in IMDb judge a movie on how realistic it is. If you think this movie is worth a 1 because it is unlikely that tiny creatures walk on the tongue of a space ship modeled as a man then you probably better refrain from posting reviews and stick to watching documentaries only. More and more I think that a low rating in IMDb means that I should see that movie which also means from time to time (only) it is really bad. But this movie certainly isn't! This is not our favourite Murphy movie (that is Coming to America) but it is certainly something different and a pleasure to watch.
