Joseph Walts I recently had the pleasure of stumbling upon a showing of this on TV. I have been a fan of Metallica ever since I was introduced to metal. They will always be on the top of the list for me no matter how many albums they may release with an overly compressed dynamic range.The presentation of this sort-of "Rockumentary" is absolutely something I would expect from MTV. I thoroughly enjoyed all the songs covered by other bands for some of Metallica's most famous songs. Korn did an excellent job with "One". But with usual MTV fashion there is a lot left to be desired. Namely with the audio quality. I almost had to turn it off because the audio quality of the entire show was so bad I just cringed the entire time.Does anyone know if there is a version that I can view that has better than 92Kbps compressed audio quality? I have no problem with paying for a DVD considering the excellent content that it would contain.

love_sexy_deryck Sum 41 was great, they even did the songs better!!, Metallica was great too, Avril was not really "happy" when she singed, she was like: "Can we just end this crap". Korn was good and Limp Bizkit... Snoop Dogg didn't sing for a very long time but it was good.

Andy (Incubus_Reborn) Well, I tuned into MTV Icon this year to see Metallica get some well earned respect and hopefully learn something I didn't know already. Well, first off, the documentary that was split up between performances and various interludes was rather boring. Why? Watch VH1's Behind The Music, it's all covered there. The documentary is basically for people unfamiliar with the band. The performances/covers were what mainly made the show worth watching. The show opens with Sum 41 doing an impressive medley of Metallica songs (including For Whom The Bell Tolls, Master of Puppets, and Enter Sandman). This performance was a huge surprise, because they pulled it off so seamlessly and almost effortlessly. Very impressive. Staind give us a nice, but short, acoustic cover of Nothing Else Matters. Avril Lavigne's band is in top form for Fuel (not surprising that she chooses something from Reload, I doubt she was alive when the Black Album came out) but really, she has no stage presence at all (do something with the hair). Limp Bizkit do a rap-metal rendition of Welcome Home (Sanitarium) which they actually pulled off very well. Although the solos are deleted, it's still an energetic, and (gulp) original performance. Snoop Dogg turns a good opportunity sour with his embarrassing talk-rap of Sad But True. This could have been interesting, but he falls flat and everyone seems bored. Korn come through as the winners though, with their stellar performance of One. They sound so natural performing that song and it got the best reaction from the audience, next to, that is Metallica themselves, who close out the show with a medley of older tracks and a new one: Frantic, which of course was cut off at the end by the credits (stupid mistake). The rest of the show is kind of a waste. I mean, Lisa Marie Presley presenting? What the hell was that?

whitewolf03 I'll start off by saying i am a Metallica fan. When I heard that MTV was going to honor them by giving them the 'ICON' award, I took it as good news....The show itself was somewhat worth the viewing. The covers of the 'Tallica songs we not of the best, but they could have gotten worse. The 5 part documentary that was shown really highlighted Metallica's 20+ year carrer. From the days with Dave Mustaine, to MOP and Cliff's death, to the making of the famous 'Black Album', the doc really did the show justice. Metallica's ending performance was worth the wait alone, as they did a meldely of 'Hit the Lights', 'Creeping Death', 'Blackened', 'Enter Sandman', and 'Battery'. After that, James proclams "We may be ICONs, but we're not done yet." Then they kick into 'Frantic' from their new upcoming album 'St. Anger'Overall, MTV ICON: Metallica was a decent show, but with all the nu-metal artists and rappers ruining their masterpiece songs, it's not the best show MTV has ever done.3.5/5
