John Cox This is one of the rare films made in this decade that is actually watchable, and I'd watch it again and again. It's basically a fun story of a slick salesman who receives penguins from his father that passed on, and both he and his kids get to love the penguins.I would really mention that the movie stars the penguins mainly, who truly do take the fun spots of the movie quite easily, from when they joyfully slide through the halls at the gala, or when Nimrod runs into a wall. And finally, for the conscientious viewer, there are quite a few omg throughout the film and one mention of "for Christ's sake", but otherwise this is a funny and great weekend film for the whole family, and there's not much more to say, other than try watching it!
David Arnold Young children (and probably some adults as well to be honest) who find movies like Alvin & The Chipmunks, Hop and Stuart Little humorous will more than likely enjoy this slapstick caper with Jim Carey as Tom Popper, a man who has been sent 6 penguins by his world explorer father to look after. Now, I thought the combination of penguins and Jim Carey would have had the winning result of a very amusing movie, but I was pretty disappointed in all honesty. Carey, while amusing, wasn't anywhere near his best and I think the true stars of the movie were definitely Bitey, Loudy, Stinky, Captain, Lovey & Nimrod. This is a very predictable movie, and with a penguin named Stinky you just know it contains the usual fart jokes and toilet humour to try and keep it entertaining. And in a way it does because, if truth be told, it's that and Nimrod's clumsy, slapstick behaviour that keeps the humour ticking along. Unfortunately those, and the occasional moments from Carey, are the only moments of real humour. All in all, while it's a decent, feel good movie, it is still a bit of a let down.
Prismark10 Carrey is back in Liar Liar mode or is it Yes Man? Anyhow Popper is an ace real estate developer and he is out to close a deal with Miss Van Gundy (Angela Lansbury) to buy the Tavern on the Green which should make him a partner in the firm.Popper is too busy with work and too busy to be with his kids and his lack of attention of his domestic life led to his divorce. He inherits some penguins from his deceased dad and life becomes chaotic in his upscale apartment which he turns into a winter wonderland but he is being pursued by a zoo keeper who wants to take the penguins off him but Popper's kids engage with their dad for the first time. There is some fun with CGI penguins as they slide and shimmer but its a case of a Carrey film where we seen it all before with Carrey as the workaholic corporate executive once again. Kids will find the penguins fun and Carrey's face pulling endearingly enough but its a fair enough film but nothing more.
callanvass (Plot) An arrogant businessman's life begins to alter for the better when he inherits six penguins. His apartment becomes a suitable, winter home for the Penguins, and everything begins to change around himCarrey's star has waned a bit over the past few years, but he can still be very funny with the proper scripts. I wouldn't say this is one of his best movies, but its decent entertainment for sure. It has plenty of slapstick gags that will get some chuckles going, and a sentimental story that rings true. Any complaints? Not really. It is very predictable, and it was easy to see where most things were headed, but it's a family film, not something that is gonna bring in the Oscars. Jim Carrey is funny as per usual, and I enjoyed him immensely. His interactions with the Penguins were cute & amusing. Carla Gugino is a classy lady, and made for a good love interest. Angela Lansbury has a small, but effective role, whilst Clark Gregg steals every scene he's in. Final Thoughts: This is a good rental or a good selection on Netflix if you are looking for something to watch. It's also a film the whole family can get some kicks out of. It's not great, but I felt it was decent. Give it a whirl6/10
