ben hibburd National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is the third instalment into the Vacation series. Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo return to reprise their roles of Clark and Ellen Griswold. As-well the children have been recast again, this time Juliette Lewis and Jonny Galecki star as Audrey and rusty. And they're the most memorable of the young actors in these roles.Christmas Vacation sees the Griswold's host Christmas with their dysfunctional extended family that have a knack of causing all sorts of mischief and chaos. Whilst Clark and Ellen act as the glue that holds both families together. This film is definitely a vast improvement over European Vacation. The story and over-all zaniness has been toned down making the film more palatable. One of the biggest issues I had with the film is it recycles many of the jokes that were done in the first two films. There were some jokes that made think seriously they're doing this again, in-particular Clark's dream sequence. A-lot of the jokes didn't hit the mark for me. However all the performances felt earnest and all the characters were likeable especially Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo who were once again the best thing about the film.Over-all Christmas Vacation is a safe film that tones down some of the more raunchier humour of the previous films. However due to the sheer likeability of the Griswolds, Christmas Vacation makes for a charming if at times slightly dull Christmas film.
OneEightNine Media This is a fun little holiday classic and maybe the best National Lampoons movie out of the lot. Anyway, it is about a father trying too hard to give his family the perfect Xmas experience but fails miserly at it and many full belly laughs are the result. The film is charming even if it doesn't seem as funny as it was when you were a kid. But whatever, usually Xmas comedies are a fail; Office Xmas Party, I'm looking at you. I hope Hollywood never remakes this.. but I would be surprised if they did remake it just out of spite and to grab people's goats and run them around the mud a bit. You know the score. But yeah, this is a solid family film.
John Brooks Where the first Vacation was actually funny with original comedic ideas and a humor more natural than forced, this here is just another volume down the conveyor belt of manufactured laugh-material, so not in rhythm, and not original, and plain not funny. If you're not American, chances are you'll look at this and ask yourself why it got so popular, for instance, the 7.5+ rating here on IMDb. The answer is simple: make a Christmas themed comedy utilizing an already established, recognizable crew (from previous films), and make sure you have all the family holiday clichés pop out randomly from everywhere to the point of bursting, and it won't matter how funny or well made the film is, culturally all the ingredients for good fun are there as the people identify strongly to the on screen depictions.4.5/10
NateWatchesCoolMovies National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is just as demented as the other Vacation flicks, which in general are pretty weird to begin with. Stemming from Chevy Chase's off kilter personality, into the antics of the rest of the cast, it's a jumble of jokes that don't always land and are somewhat trapped in an 80's humour bubble, but are also frequently hilarious. Chase plays awkward Clark Griswold, overseeing a chaotic holiday celebration at his home with his wife (Beverly D'Angelo) and kids, including a very young Juliette Lewis, as well as his extended clan, headed up by obnoxious, boorish brother Randy Quaid who assists him in his struggles with his selfish boss. It all flies by in a flurry of silliness, with memorable appearances from Sam Mcmurray, Diane Ladd, E.G. Marshall, Doris Roberts, William Hickey and more. Always a weird and wonderful holiday treat.
