Armand it is a pure Dickens. the spirit of novel, the details of its universe, the splendid acting - Jamie Bell is the great revelation - are pieces of a lovely sensitive film who can not only seduce but be an admirable discover. because it is a beautiful movie and its beauty is result not only for the inspiration of director and exemplary choice of cast but for the recreation, with care and precision, of a world atmosphere, the powerful images, the great performance, the Dickens spirit, together, makes the entire work more than a common adaptation. work of extraordinary actors, it is a real joy for viewer. and that is important. so, see it !
TheLittleSongbird Overall, this film is very good. The book is just great, and while not my favourite book by Charles Dickens it is an engrossing read with vivid characters. What stuck out for me was the film's beautiful period detail and production values. As to be expected, the cinematography is very nice, while the costumes and scenery are just gorgeous. The music is lovely too and captures every mood of every scene perfectly. The story is still engrossing, the characters are still interesting and the pace is fine. Also the direction is nicely done. The writing occasionally jars particularly with Anne Hathaway's character, but overall the film is well written particularly with Uncle Ralph and Mr Squeers. The acting on the whole is very good. Charlie Hunnam is likable enough in the lead, while both Jim Broadbent and Christopher Plummer are just marvellous and Tom Courtenay is both humorous and heart wrenching. For me, only Anne Hathaway disappointed. She is a lovely and appealing actress, but she does have some of the film's worst dialogue which she didn't quite try to give some oomph to, and I also thought she was a little too modern. In conclusion, it is a very good film. 8/10 Bethany Cox
Khemaluck Deeprawat I rented this movie because it receives 7.3 average scores from the votes in IMDb.com However, it was a little disappointing. The film did not capture my interest that much. I think it's because the main character is an all too-good gentleman. The evil is just plain evil. It's like watching an old movie that wants to teach and uplift moral in society. Well, good intention, but a bit preachy and boring. The conversation is too long and some are unnecessary. The story is just nothing but a series of hardship that one has to go through, but somehow Nicholas seems to know it all how to deal with the obstacles in his life. What's fun about that? He already knows that he will win and the story does not make it too difficult for him to win. Actually, in the beginning when he was sent to that horrible school and finally stood up against the evil couple and helped the poor crippled boy, I was shouting in my mind 'Go,Nick,Go! You must do it. Don't let them hurt that poor boy!' That part was very good and very moving. But after that, our Nicholas becomes the know-it-all hero who looks like a knight in shiny armour. He rescues everyone. He is a real gentleman with no flaw. That's really the weakest point of this film. Don't get me wrong. This is not a terrible film or anything. It's well intended and the story is harmless for viewers of all ages. The acting is fine. The cinematography, the lighting, the scenery, are very beautiful. It's just that the story is a bit too dragging and the characters are too flat. That's all. I still want to recommend this as a family movie, the one you can watch with young children and let them see example of true gentleman. It's better than let them watch something full of gun, blood, and swearing.
Pevensies Juliet Stevenson seems to be devoted acting as Mrs. Squeers. After her first appearance in the movie, I knew Mrs. Squeers was very odd, rude, and has her own way of dealing almost every matter. Mrs. Squeers is worse than Mr. Squeers, who Jim Broadbent acted as. Juliet made the character so realistic, which is practically needed for every character in every movie/TV show. I think it's just amazing how she and Jim Broadbent made the characters seem so real. The movie is absolutely perfect for Juliet Stevenson and Jim Broadbent. I almost didn't recognize Jim the first time I watched the movie. Actually, I have the DVD and watched the Special Features. All the major actors had fun being in the movie together. Two of the actors have previously done a movie together. I can't remember who it was. Oh, it was Charlie Hunnam and Tom Courtenay. Of course, I cannot forget Anne Hathaway, Nathan Lane, Alan Cumming, and Jamie Bell as (from start to finish) Madeline, Vincent Crummles, Mr. Folair, and Smike. Now, they were also amazing as well. (Anne Hathaway, Nathan Lane, and Alan Cumming are my personal favorite actors.)To be honest, the entire cast and crew of the movie were amazing. I barely noticed any mistakes; all actors made their characters realistic; the choreography is fantastic, and the directing/producing made the movie a hit, even though I didn't know about the movie until this year. My sister gave me this movie, Nicholas Nickleby, as a high school graduation gift. I have not yet stopped watching this movie. The movie was so well written, produced, and directed that I can't stop watching this movie. I've probably watched it at least five to eight times since the beginning of June.Anyone who is anyone can watch Nicholas Nickleby and not cry or laugh. It might matter what kind of genre movies you're into, but I do recommend Nicholas Nickleby to everyone. This movie is just fantastic, and has many twists, turns, and shocking news. *Whispers.* But I won't go into that. You'll have to watch the movie.
