lukem-52760 DAN AYKROYD is a comedy genius & legend & here he has directed his one & only movie & it's just so much fun!!! It got so much hate & yet it's just pure fun from a comedy genius!!! A crazy old man who Aykroyd plays, we have the other comedy king CHEVY CHASE who is always fun to watch & dan Aykroyds close buddy in real life is great here & we have the BRILLIANT JOHN CANDY who also is fantastic & a comic genius & an all round good cast & good characters. Aykroyd done a great job directing & his movie is a good fun & very inventive Comedy Thriller!!! Never follow critics just like & enjoy what you like, i do
tuckerconstable-07055 Dan Aykroyd has always been an off the wall comedian, but his ideas had never been fully realized. Usually what happens is he comes up with some incredibly crazy and abstract ideas that are almost out of this world, and then a second screen writer comes in and brings those ideas down to earth while still keeping Aykroyd's basic premise and ideas intact. This happened many times, especially in the 80's with films like "The Blues Brothers", "Spies Like Us" and "Ghostbusters". However, with "Nothing But Trouble" he is given full creative control-and it is absolutely beautiful."Nothing But Trouble" starts out normal enough. Chevy Chase plays a self absorbed yuppie who meets a woman, played by Demi Moore, who needs to get to Atlantic City. Chase agrees to take her there with the hope that they can begin a relationship together. Instead what follows is a faux "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" type misadventure. Chase takes a wrong turn, leading to a deserted little village called Valkenvania. Chase ends up running a red late and is taken to the local justice of the peace by the village constable (played by John Candy). There they meet Judge Alvin Valkenheiser (Dan Aykroyd-under heavy, heavy, heavy prosthetics and make up). Chevy Chase and Demi Moore are hoping to get out very quickly, but the judge has other plans in mind."Nothing But Trouble" is a strange little picture, there's absolutely nothing like it-and for that I applaud it. But, on a story telling level, there is a story-but it seems to be held together by a very flimsy backstory and a plot that just kinda happens. But, that's sort of the charm of the film. It's almost like an updated version of dark comedies like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre Par 2". It's never fully horror, but it's hard to call it a straight up "comedy". The back of the box for the film makes it sound like a "Beetlejuice" clone-in fact it directly says that-but with "Beetlejuice" it was easy to tell what was comedy in that film. With "Nothing But Trouble", the laughs come from how awkward and weird things can get. The comedy is not really for everyone, but it's a treat for people who love dark comedy. The only thing I can say before you watch "Nothing But Trouble" is go in with an WIDE OPEN mind. Despite starring Chevy Chase, John Candy and Dan Aykroyd-three comedy legends-don't expect "Caddyshack" or "Ghostbusters". All I can say is think of it as an absurd cross between an exploitation film of the 70's and "National Lampoon's Animal House". And even that doesn't fully describe "Nothing But Trouble".
Ziglet_mir The majority of reviewers and people are wrong on this one by several miles.Talk about a fever dream. Or if David Lynch made his own wacky version of Beetlejuice meets Planes, Trains and Automobiles meets Deliverance. Sure, there were funny moments from a film that has nothing but comedians in it, however, there are moments that take what is bizarre and goes seven steps further. I think all of us have heard and seen of horror turning into comedy, but in my experience it has been very rare to find comedy turn into horror... and done excellently. I understand why so many people don't like it, and apparently Siskel hated it too, but this isn't a poorly made film. Dan Aykroyd proves he has some directing chops by creating a goofy yet horrifying landscape in the Pennsylvannian/NJ/NY back roads. We always choose to judge a movie by how good it makes us feel, while we think we are in for a comedy here with Nothing But Trouble we are deeply mistaken, and I think plenty of people rate this film so low because they expected much differently. People who hate this movie I can guarantee feel the same way I do now after watching it. They feel uncomfortable; unsure of what they just watched and can't get the disturbing images of some of the characters out of their heads (shout out to you Bobo and Lil' Dubbel). It's like being in a world you wish never existed; like I said before a nightmarish fever dream that continually gets more surreal as the movie goes on.Chevy Chase proves to be a fantastic straight man in an absurd world. Aykroyd and my man John Candy pulling in double duty for the most terrifying roles in what must be ages, because let's face it, I never thought I'd be saying either of those two would play anything terrifying. Aykroyd takes control of the screen as does Candy when scenes call for their presence. Demi Moore is solid as Chase's romance interest, and Taylor Negron (very over the top) is great in his small role.If you love dark comedies or even slightly enjoy them, this is for you but as many people on the handful of reviews I've already seen have said: this makes "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Deathtrap" and "Heathers" seem like Peewee's Playhouse. The only other dark comedy that has made me feel even this closely unsettled is "Very Bad Things" (1998). The last film in general that has affected me anywhere close to this unsettled was probably "Come and See" (1985), but this my friends, this film takes the cake.Another comment I read off of YouTUbe which summed this film up completely was: "I used to think Stephen King was out of his mind, but Aykroyd just speedballed him."This movie gets a high rating from me, near shy of a perfect score for an amazing cast, getting something I was completely not asking for (in the best way), and having so many lucid feelings after watching something I thought people had pinned correctly as cinematic garbage.
Michael Gosser I hadn't seen this movie for probably 20 years. I'm a big fan of John Candy and Chevy Chase from the late 80s/early 90s. I'm not sure what triggered my brain to think about this specific movie, but something did, so i went online and bought the DVD. After the impulse purchase, I was having a little buyer's remorse from reading the overwhelming negative reviews on here. I was questioning my choice and asking myself "Was it not as funny as i remembered?!?" I just finished watching it and my post-purchase trepidation was a waste of time and energy. Was it the funniest thing on the planet? No. Did it entertain and make me chuckle. Yes. Was it worth the four bucks I paid for the DVD? HELL YES! The frequent Chevy Chase comments throughout the film alone are worth that. If you don't like it, God bless your little heart - and find something better to do than post negativity where none is needed :)
