TheDennisBergkampFan This is my second attempt at watching a Turkish movie and I must say that I am terribly disappointed. Its not even in the same league as the Iranian movies. Its like they have lots of free reel lying around and they are just taping random stuff and calling it movies. In this one a murder has been committed and the police are driving around with the suspect to locate the body. There is no background to the story. There is no ending to the story if there is even a story to begin with. It is just one stupid random conversation after another. Even if they make a Shawshank Redemptionesque movie in Turkish you can count me out. Its like they make movies just to test your patience. This one is 21/2 hrs. Winter Sleep was 31/2 hrs. Absolute nonsense of a film industry. The only thing worthwhile about the movie is that a beautiful girl appears for all of 2 minutes probably. What a bull of a movie. Why did they murder the guy? Who murdered the guy? Give me a stupid camera and I will make something better than this nonsense. In other movies if a guy has to go from point A to point B they wil show him leave, then maybe a bit of the journey and then him arriving at point B. In Turkish cinema if someone has to walk 500 steps they will show him walk all 500 steps. Absolute nonsense. Its time someone throws away their camera and shuts down that industry. It is just mind numbing nonsense.
aphrodisiaciix Except for some nice shots of the grassy landscape and the beautiful shots capturing the mayor's daughter, this is one long and boring flick. The end is sudden and without further explanations or closing of the already mundane story. The violence was unnecessary and the angry acting in that scene by the chief of police was unconvincing and amateurish. The staring exchanges between the doctor and the prosecutor were inexplicable, out of place, and unneeded.A slow and pretentious movie which should be avoided at all cost.
ReganRebecca I went into this completely blind, but aware of the generally positive reception it had received and fell head over heels in love with this movie. After two brothers murder a man and bury his body somewhere a small group of men are assigned to go on a hellish roadtrip, in the middle of the night, to try and find the body based on vague descriptions one of the murderers, who claimed to be drunk at the time of the murder, gives to the police. While both brothers are along for the ride, the local doctor (Muhammet Uzuner) and the prosecutor (Taner Birsel). As the men travel from location to location in the dark, they naturally begin to converse with each other on medical issues, on parents and children etc. The prosecutor even begins to talk of strange old cases he remembers, especially one involving a woman who predicted the date of her own death. To say more would be to the spoil the plot of a very slow moving but beautiful movie, one in which details dropped early on become more and more important. The construction of the screenplay is really surreal and something else and the unwieldy twists and turns it follows lead to a very beautiful place where we learn the meaning of mercy. The acting is really fabulous, but the true star here is director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (who also co-wrote the screenplay) who makes the slow camera work feel dynamic and alive.
cathalokane I have had this movie sitting on a hard drive for quite a while. After reading a gushing Guardian review some time ago I acquired it and put it aside for a future watch.I sat down to give it a go last night, and was tremendously disappointed. The pacing of the film is painfully slow, and you are forced to sit through extended scenes of cars driving... slowly....driving... slowly along dark roads. There is a bit of atmosphere to the film, but given how low key everything is the picture has to be saved by the characters, the dialogue or the story. In a bland film such as this, the dialogue must be razor sharp, the characters must be mesmeric, or the plot has to be intriguing. Sadly, at least in the first forty minutes, there is nothing of note in the dialogue. The odd moment raises a chuckle, but it is nowhere near enough to hold your interest. Its just ambling along, seemingly going nowhere and its very hard to stay engaged.Admittedly I was quite tired when watching this film, but absolutely nothing about it stirred me from my daze, it was just uniformly uneventful and nothing else made up for this. I gave it roughly forty minutes and my girlfriend and I agreed we had both seen enough.A disappointing 4/10.
