BA_Harrison Directed by and starring Jackie Chan, Project A is a martial arts classic, a lavish late-19th century adventure featuring some of the most incredible fight action and death defying stunts imaginable. Chan plays Navy recruit Dragon Ma Yue Lung, who teams up with police captain Tzu (Yuen Baio) and lovable thief Fei (Sammo Hung) to try and bring to justice the pirates (led by Lor Sam Pau, played by Dick Wei) who have been marauding the Hong Kong seas.Even though the film's plot is slight and contains plenty of the broad slapstick comedy that I often struggle with, the quantity and quality of the action still qualifies the film as unmissable, its three stars, Chan, Baio and Hung, at the top of their game (causing plenty of pain for the poor stuntmen extras). Chan, in particular, delivers some of his finest moments, including a brilliantly choreographed scene involving bicycles and narrow alleyways, a fight amongst the gears and cogs of a clock tower, and, most memorable of all, a bone-crunching high fall guaranteed to make the jaw drop. The excellent finale sees our three heroes take on Lor Sam Pau in the pirate's island hideout, and is well worth the wait, all four fighters providing impeccably timed and expertly executed feats of physical prowess.
Fella_shibby I saw this in the late 80s in New talkies theatre (present globus cinema). It is funny, fast paced, and full of action and amazing stunts. It is an exceptional period film featuring some of the best action sequences caught on film. It has the awesome bicycle chase/fight on the narrow alleys which ended with Jacky's death defying fall from the clock tower. The masterful display of choreography and martial arts is impressive and outstanding. The stunts are so many and very challenging to perform but they are executed in a most precise and stylish way. This movie started a new genre for Jackie n put an end to ol skool kung fu. Its co directed n acted by Jackie Chan n Sammo Kam-Bo Hung. This film is an explosive fusion Of unparalleled martial artistry, death defying stunts & physical comedy. Featuring some of the most amazing fight & stunt sequences ever shot on film.
julesdil Project A the classic No its another film I paid for which was likable and different but dull. Chan and his crew are old hong Kong coast guards mixed in a dull formula of military style training and arguing with loudmouth police who is lead by then Biro who is Chan's opponent yet become pirate fighters , Samoa hung is funny in this as a caring thief who adds to the films dullness the 3 do some martial arts and with objects which is inventive yet that the story loses its fights and fun and goes into a police , crime story with the same things seen in films such as police story. Don't get me wrong the film is fun with stunts and decent action shown including the team fighting the pi rte boss sang PO , its different and the music is a entertaining piece of period film but it isn't a film you can just love . I have the platinum edition with special features which are nothing but the actors talking about how films have lost there fame and for such a popular film paying for this dose not pay for anything really . Worth watching or buying for about a fiver not 20 pounds , the climax of the film is disappointing its just a fight which is shown in parts and its no fun 3 v one great opponent its just a rushed finale , get it if you want but so far Chan's films ain't done justice so. far and yes I'm collecting Chan's films in every best version possible and have not got far yet , I am getting a few then Biro and Samoa hung films to see if they are are gonna move me .I have the films the prodigal son and knockabout ready to view I'll have a say about them in a review as I paid 20 pounds for both normal hong Kong legends release it could have been platinum , or even a set of editions for this price , it amazes me how this person I know has many of these rare movies .
honorhorror If you were very disappointed by Jackie Chan's recent works, don't make your conclusions too fast that he's just so so. Instead, watch Project A and its sequel. The movie is not Oscar Stuff, it's not even hot at that year's HK movie awards. However its value purely as a action movie is still recognized until today. To say it made history is not exaggerating at all. Audiences were often awed by the fact that Jackie jumped down from places like clock towers and roofs with no proper protection and no camera tricks at all. This is something Hollywood wouldn't do, therefore it made history. Artistically, Project A is a perfect blending of comedy and Kungfu. The story centers around two cops and a thief. One cop is a street cop and the other one is a coast cop, and they hated each other. The thief was really good at what he does, but had an unusual friendship with the coast cop. The coming of a pirates' fleet changed all the situation and pushed the 3 into a dedicated fighting. The plot is not very far from a farce, but it created so many chances for the actors to make fun for us. Many chasing sequences are tight, thrilling and goofy at the same time, but it never get you nervous. The pace, the choreography and the fun made it a perfectly entertaining movie even after 3 decades. If the earth doesn't explode in 50 years, this movie will still be one of the best choices of action fans that time. To say that Project A is Star Wars of the modern Kungfu movies is not exaggerating either. It totally started Jackie Chan's own dynasty at HK movie industry. The whole movie was written, directed and leading-acted by Jackie Chan himself. It would give you some hints why he's so welcomed. These days, we respect him mainly because his glorious old days.
