Charles Herold (cherold) A lot of people are describing Ruby Sparks as a romantic comedy, but I'd be more inclined to call it an indictment of people who want their relationships to be as light and fluffy as a romantic comedy. The movie follows a blocked writer who creates a character that somehow becomes real. Yet, as another character points out, she's not real. She is essentially a somewhat muted version of the manic pixie trope, but the movie gets away with it because it's more a movie about the sort of guy who creates manic pixies.Much of the movie is fluffy and funny, but as it progresses a darkness seeps in that makes me resist the romantic comedy label. To me the movie is more a critique than a romance, although I feel the script fails to follow it's own logic through to the end, offering an ending that is emotionally satisfying but feels intellectual dishonest.Still, it's quirky and funny and original, with good performances.
marianajb I knew the moment when I finished the movie that what happened in those minutes, something that you not usually see, happened; something good. I stayed like a week without getting over this movie; I haven't felt like that for a film in a very long time, that night I couldn't sleep just thinking about it, about the everything of it, and it was at that moment that I knew this movie became something of me, one of my favorite motion pictures. I feel like everything in this film is meant to be: the directors, the actors, the time and the place were it was filmed, the story, the wholeness of it. I usually don't like fantasy stories, but in this one, is completely unexpected, and that is what I like the most: to be impressed. Starting with the idea of him as a writer, makes it in a very poetic and romantic way; he even idealizes the idea of his perfect woman; and just the relationship they have, and well... how he controls her at some point, is just perfect and very beautiful. At the end the message of: "if you love someone or something let it go", and I loved the resolution of the movie because it leaves us with the idea of hoping that they come back again. Also the book that he writes "for Her" is like the most perfect, incredible and awesome end for one of the most incredible and awesome films ever. The photography and cinematography and how they used the colors they used according of what was happening in the lives of the main characters, and that looked splendid. The actors, all of them, both the protagonists and the other ones, were right for the role, they knew who to played them and they did it with passion and love for everything that is the seventh form of art. If you are a true lover of good and brilliant movies, this one will definitely blow your expectation. At first and I think that in a way right now to, got me speechless and it really hard for that to happened. This motion picture truly is something. 9.9/10
Razvan Rogoz This is a movie that you can either love or hate, based on how you see it.On one side, it is a fantasy movie with "Groundhog day" accents (no, the day doesn't repeat again and again). On the other side, it is a beautiful metaphor which if you recognize, it is impossible not to give it a 10. Not because it is perfect. It has charm but it is a bit slow paced at times and the execution is not amazing. But rather because ... it feels so familiar. It is one of those movies describing what we've done, what we've felt, like it is our story. It is a different setting, different people, different circumstances but it is our personal story, at least for a large majority of people. This is why I like it and this is why I've decided to write this review. It made me think. It made me feel. It made me remember some parts of my life. It made me go over the plot holes and the "how the hell this can happen" type of scenes but rather, just think ..."Would I do the same?" and most importantly ..."Have I've done the same?".That's why you should watch this movie. The plot is not that important. The underlying message of this movie is. While I don't like romantic comedies so much, I can place it next to two other movies "If I stay" and "Tres Metro El Cielo". And while these two movies may seem as a "How to boost your estrogen level in 90 minutes" types of art, they also carry a very profound lesson.
mabogie This film is a great riff on Pygmalion with great comic highlights as well as darker questions about controlling a relationship. Well acted, lots of fun, and original. In a world where intelligent scripts are in short supply, this one definitely makes the grade. What would you do if you could create your dream mate, to determine if that person was happy or sad, what they did and what they felt? What would that control feel like? What would you do if the dream mate started growing and having her own feelings, moving away from you in the process? How can you let go of something you have created? There's plenty to think about in this movie, yet it is sweet, light and amusing. Kudos to the team that brought it forward.
