Greywolf907 It was over 20 years ago that I first saw Rustlers Rhapsody, being screened on late night TV to an audience of few it became in my house anyway, an instant classic.Sure, all of the jokes don't work, name me a film that is funny all the way through...but this gentle send up of the genre deserves a far better rating than it has.The premise is simple....how would a 40's Hollywood cowboy, admirably played straight and white hatted by Tom Beringer, fare in the real wild west, up against the evil cattle barons and landowners. From the early scenes in the saloon where we are introduced, sadly ephemerally to 'Blackie' and the rest of the main characters, Rustlers Rhapsody takes us on a gentle ride through western clichés where all characters are totally 2 dimensional and played to perfection by the ensemble cast.Memorable line for me was always Blackies famous uttering 'You look to me like one of them fellers thats attracted to other men' (paraphrased)Outstanding entertainment for a cold Saturday afternoon!
gjudd-1 Absolutely side splitting satirical look at the early singing cowboy western. Tom Berringer plays Rex O'Herlihan the singing cowboy who spoofs every western cliché in the book. Great comedy performances are made in this movie by Andy Griffith, Mary Lu Henner, Sela Ward and Fernado Rey plus a lot of great supporting actors. Also Patrick Wayne makes a guest appearance in the movie. If you are looking for a sophisticated film that the critics all love, this probably won't be it. But if you're regular folks that enjoy the old time western, you'll bust a gut laughing at this movie. Side note, the main musical theme is performed by Rex Allen Jr. as well as the love theme by Country Artist Garry Morris.
Cod Purcell I loved how this movie portrays Andy Griffith's character as a man who's sexual orientation was questionable. he has some very funny lines that can almost slip by you if you're not paying attention to the way they are delivered and to who they are delivered to. It takes several minutes into the movie before you start to realize That 'ol Colonel Ticonderoga is doing more at his ranch than just handling cattle. He gets sassy in some scenes too. I find it to be a total 180 from the old Andy Griffith show as far as his character is concerned. It seems he will always be remembered as the "Sherriff of Mayberry", but if you love that show you must see this movie!!! It shows Andy's comedic ability that seemed to vanish early on in the old TV show and as Ben Matlock never really was utilized much at all.
ginostats The funniest Western spoof ever, and yes I have seen "Blazing Saddles", What makes it so is the running plot of the "Good Guy" and his never wavering bravery and honor...the jokes are both overt and subliminal, but they actually make you laugh, not cringe,(as in "saddles") An adult can laugh his Ass off, and still feel OK letting his eight year old view along with him. .....Also for those of us who grew up with John Wayne as our hero, don't miss the closing credits song "The Last of the Silver Screen Cowboys" By Rex Allen Jr. If you can remember sitting on a Saturday afternoon in a cinema as a kid in the 40's or 50's, or in front of the TV with dad in the 60's or 70's watching the old westerns this song is sure to bring a tear to the eye...Enjoy this off the wall treat!!
