Floated2 Saving Silverman is an early 2000's teen-comedy film (released in 2001) by director Dennis Dugan (known for his Adam Sandler films such as Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy, Grown Ups, etc). Saving Silverman is a film where the comedy is not intelligent and it relies on silly and gross out gags, and awkward putting situations involving the lead characters. The problems with this film is that although we understand not to take it serious, the logic in everything ultimately fails and it becomes quite tiresome. The positive are the acting from the characters. Jason Biggs is likable enough portraying the same character as his American Pie character, while Steve Zahn and Jack Black are decent at their roles though their characters are quite delusional and awful friends. Another thing which was quite implausible but not completely hard to believe, is the film makes note that the three lead characters have been friends since the fifth grade. Though there is a quite an age gap between Jason Biggs to Steve Zahn (11+ years), and Jason Biggs to Jack Black (9+ years). It is a minor flaw but Steve Zahn most definitely looked far older than Jason Biggs in the film. This film tenders towards dark comedy humor at points with it's ridiculous plot line and eventually actions. It seems like the director was trying to make a film in the direction similar to the Farrelly brother films, but this film lacks the comedy humor and timing of the Farrelly films. Though Saving Silverman has it's moments, this film has been quite forgotten.
liambl Three Neil Diamond fans, having been friends since the fifth grade, live a part-time-job as a tribute band. It is right up until they meet Judith (played by Amanda Peet), an attractive psychologist. One of the three, Darren (played by Jason Biggs) begins a relationship with her; however, she may not be as beautiful and charming as she may seem. As time passes, not only does she take advantage of him, but pretty much his entire life. Darren's friends, Wayne (played by Steve Zahn) and J.D. (played by Jack Black) draw the line to this as they go through non-easy tasks to get him back. The film also stars Amanda Detmer as Sandy, Darren's cheer-leading partner as well as high school crush. The first thing I'd like to say is that I watched this expecting it to be nothing other than an American Pie clone, but that wasn't exactly the case. It doesn't revolve around sex-crazed teens, college kids, or anyone like that. This movie revolves around three musically talented (yet widely dimwitted and immature) adults. Much to my surprise, it is actually Wayne who is the smartest out of the three, while Darren is actually the dumb one; after all, it is made loud and clear that he's always been the most gullible. I mean, he literally cannot see for once that Judith is manipulating him.I would also add that Amanda Peet does an excellent job playing the antagonist. The moment she appeared on screen, I did not get a good vibe from her. And as the film went on, I could definitely see why. SZ and JB also great jobs as the supportive best friends. Both, however, seemed very annoying at best during the first act. But, once again, as the film went on, I grew loving the hell out of both of them; not to mentioned that I laughed my nuts off during the kidnapping scene.Honestly though, my favorite part of the whole thing was Sandy. I knew that I recognized the actress from something, but I couldn't figure out what. But as soon as I looked her up, I realized that she played the snotty girlfriend in Final Destination. She was absolutely adorable whenever she was on screen. From what I've read, critics have bashed this movie for its "mean-spiritedness". Honestly, that's definitely not how I saw it.
namikazedante This movie does not deserve the hate it apparently has gotten is my first line. We all have had or still do have that friend who is so blind to see that he is a puppet under an over controlling and abusing girlfriend. And this movie hits those notes perfectly. It is an perfect comedy with that theme. And yes it's a hilarious movie, anyone who tries telling you anything else is either lying or has a heart of ice and stone. Or simply doesn't have any humor. So do yourself a very big service and watch this movie about love, friendship and just some crazy jokes and actors.
SnoopyStyle Wayne LeFessier (Steve Zahn), J.D. McNugent (Jack Black), and Darren Silverman (Jason Biggs) are childhood best friends Neil Diamond fanatics. Wayne was the third string high school quarterback. J.D. was the idiot mascot. Darren was a hopelessly romantic male cheerleader pining for fellow cheerleader Sandy (Amanda Detmer). Psychologist Judith (Amanda Peet) is bitchy and has Darren wrapped around her finger. She forbids him from hanging with his two loser friends. In desperation, they kidnap her to stop their wedding. Sandy comes back into their lives. She lost her love Luigi in a trapeze accident and is going into the nunnery. It's surprising that these three comedy stars couldn't do better. Amanda Peet is not the best at playing the bitch. That's one of its big problems. She doesn't really give the audience permission to root for the two idiots. The Steve Zahn, Jack Black duo have some good bumbling fun. Eventually Peet does get angry enough to be funny. Director Dennis Dugan had made a couple of Adam Sandler movies before this and this has very similar sensibilities. Sadly he has continued to follow Adam Sandler as they both slide into the comedy wilderness.
