I unfortunately had never heard of the real Selena until after I saw this movie. I love how it portrays her as a strong, courageous young woman. Thanks to this movie, Selena has become an excellent role model for women and has proven that women can be just as good as men. I hope Yolanda saldivar sees this movie if she hasn't already and is ashamed that she robbed the world of one of the greatest people who has ever lived. I have no doubt that Selena would have made it big if she were still alive. It's a shame that she didn't get see it happen. But I digress.
The cast was great. The producers had the right idea of casting a then unknown Jennifer Lopez as Selena because Selena herself wasn't quite known until after her death. Had they cast someone who was already famous, they probably would have over acted and made it look fake, not really capturing the spirit of Selena. All in all, even though I don't really like to watch this movie because of the end, i still consider this one of the best movies of all time because whenever I start to get discouraged, like to ask myself "What would Selena do?"

Love the soundtrack, beyond that it is hard to say anything positive about this movie. I was first soured when before the film went into production they put on a publicity stunt wherein they allegedly were going to tour the country looking for the perfect Hispanic young girl to portray Selena, all along knowing Jennifer Lopez had already been chosen. The local news stations had footage of countless thousands of young Hispanic girls waiting in line to audition. Truly dishonest! As for the actors and actresses, hard to say who was more annoying, Jennifer Lopez and her silly giggle and over-acting or Jackie Guerra, the overweight sister and drummer of the band who never missed a scene where you didn't want to slap her for her annoying portrayal of sister Susie.Jon Seda and Constance Marie are the only redeeming characters, playing their roles without the annoyance factor. You can save time and just buy Selena's Greatest hits CD since the only reason to watch this film is for the music.

When i first saw this movie, i did not know who Selena was, and of course i cried at the end but this movie was way more then a movie that you sit and watch you get into it and realize that this really happened and that you want to just cry. It is a sad movie and because it was true you really just want to cry more.I absolutely love the tag-line of the movie, you could not be more dead on with what the movie is really about. I am giving this movie 9/10 because it is truly amazing Go Jennifer Lopez Go Selena. Please go out and rent this movie because it was absolutely amazing and see one of the greatest singers this world has been blessed to hear.

Selena becomes the voice of a new generation of Tejanos, casting her own spell as a major contributor to the universal language. The movie gives us a generous helping of the Selena songbook, and shows how it developed from her father Abraham's (Edward James Olmos) dreams when he was a young Dion and the Belmonts wannabe in Corpus Christi of the early '60s. Olmos role turns the story into a touching and enchanting family flick. The issue of perceived identitybetween Mexican culture and American cultureis a constant throughout the movie and something Selena comes to flow between naturally....For my complete review of this movie and for other movie and book reviews, please visit my site TheCoffeeCoaster.com.Brian Wright Copyright 2007
