JokerMichel A diverting family comedy that at its best aims to be a live-action « Incredibles » and at its middling a live-action episode of « Kim Possible»
Realrockerhalloween Skyhigh was a teeny bopper flick I originally wrote off when it first came out thinking it was a borefest. This sleepy hit managed to win me over by excellent performances, special effects and the message of the film about strength coming from within. Will is an everyday kid, with superheroes for parents, who is worried that the mutant gene has passed him over and won't be able to make it at Skyhigh. Those who can't lead follow behind as sidekicks and are considered second class citizens to the boss they are assignedI felt for Will and his friends who only wanted to impress their parents. I wanted his parents to believe and trust in their son to be a great man no matte what.Layla touched my heart as the girl next door secretly in love with her best friend trope. You could see the hurt in her eyes and the innocence she possessed. Her side plot with Warrren peace was cute and I actually rooted for them in the end to get together. Bruce Campbell gave a great tongue in check performance as the fun teacher responsible for the training of tomorrows leaders. He was robbed an Oscar that year. What makes it original is the format seems like a stop motion comic book come alive on the big screen with an awesome 80s soundtrack. The plot is predictable, what movie isn't since Greek times, but it has something for everyone suspense, heart, cute boys and girls for both sexes and content for parents to enjoy who watch it with their kids. Its a nice way to spend a quite afternoon by yourself.
Wes47 Disney pulls out all the stereotypes, and crams them into this movie. Famous parents who expect too much of their kids. Kids whose biggest problem is finding someone to take to Homecoming. Moody badboy who has to work, while his classmates fight over who's going to win the Popularity Contest. Big kids beating up little kids.Average boy next door who doesn't notice average girl next door. Average boy mooning over the cutest girl in school. High School Freshman dating High School Senior. Kids fighting in the cafeteria, and no one to stop them. Kids throwing house-trashing parties as soon as their parents' backs are turned. Kids saving the day and the school, instead of, you know, being kids and actually learning something in school. All these and more are in this movie. And these are the movie's good points.None of the Freshmen were young enough to be Freshman. At 54, Kurt Russell was too old for this part. His suit had a LOT of padding. Every woman in this movie seemed to be wearing a push-up bra, as if that's an essential part of every costume. And Lynda Carter's in this to announce that she's not Wonder Woman to a bunch of kids who want her to let them out of Detention. Why would Wonder Woman do that? Only Disney knows.Worth seeing for free, but if you're paying to watch this, don't!
Python Hyena Sky High (2005): Dir: Mike Mitchell / Cast: Michael Angarano, Kurt Russell, Kelly Preston, David Foley, Mary Elizabeth Winstead: About as much fun as jumping naked upon a gigantic ant hill. Contrived crap about reaching full potential as Will Stronghold is about to enroll in a school for superheroes. His parents are superheroes so he feels pressured to measure up but he is unaware of his powers. Judging from this, his power seems to be attracting screenwriters with poor ways to translate potential good ideas. Very lame with special effects that are about as festive as a property invested with dog crap. I've seen third graders create better images out of Lego. Directed by Mike Mitchell who previously brought the world Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. He does his best with what could have been a grand idea but his cast suck big time beginning with an embarrassing performance by Michael Angarano as Will. Listening to young Stronghold whine for ninety minutes is enough of a world domination scheme on its own. Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston are a spectacle in outfits best suited for a pajama party. Then there is David Foley as a superhero professor in what amounts to not being his best moment. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a romantic interest. What a surprise. Its take on superheroes and modern life is a funny theme but the results should be blown sky high. Score: 3 / 10
