joshuabush-28688 I thought this movie was beautiful! This movie aged very well and Christopher Reeve shines again. This has to be one of my new top ten favorites, and that's hard to do! Bravo!
moonspinner55 In 1972, a college writer is approached by an elderly woman who hands him a gold pocket watch and says, "Come back to me." Eight years later, as a professional playwright under deadline, he returns to his old haunts outside Chicago and becomes enamored of a photo he sees of a local theater actress from 1912. Romantic fantasy from screenwriter Richard Matheson, adapting his book "Bid Time Return", has the young man using a self-hypnosis technique to travel from the present day back to the 1900s to meet the mysterious beauty, but her domineering manager may prove to be an obstacle. All the ingredients are here for an opulent, sweeping love story, and yet the formulaic film never lifts off, with Christopher Plummer an arrogant nasty who does everything shy of twirling his mustache. As the eternal lovers, Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are a colorless pair. Seymour has a limited range, though she's well-cast and has the style and grace to carry off her role. Reeve is a pushy, unhappy presence; a light manner or grand emotions don't come easily to him. Jeannot Szwarc directs in a plodding, connect-the-dots fashion, and yet many people have found the picture to be an inspiration. ** from ****
gil-43453 In Saturday Summer, 1982, when I was middle school student. I was waiting for the baseball game at home. But the game was postponed due to the rain, and I met this film which was the substitute of the baseball game. The mood of rainy Saturday and romantic story of beautiful youngsters gave me a deep impression. But the movie was not famous in Korea and nobody would have known anything about the movie, (even, I don't know it was released in Korea or not) and I forgot it as time went on. About a month ago, a friend of mine posted an article that introduced the Grand Hotel on Facebook, and it reminded me the movie that made me feel the feeling of love. So, I tried to find it, tried to get the movie, and I did it all at last. I saw the movie again. When I heard the theme of John Barry, I remembered the music, even I have never heard them after the two hours watching it on TV 35 years ago. The movie gave me the same feeling after 35 years.I hope I will be there, Grand Hotel in one day.
SpecialNeedsRancor It's hard to watch this movie without tears. It's also hard to think of a love story that requires you to travel through time to reunite with your loved one. In my opinion, that may be the biggest test of love.I also think that's the true test of an older film. I watched this movie when I was a child, and it affected me then. I re-watched this film tonight and it affected me now. This movie is timeless (no pun intended). If you've ever lost a loved one, regardless of the circumstance, prepare for a trip down memory lane if you watch this, as you struggle to realize your best chance to reunite with this person is in the afterlife.
