This sequel nails everything that's great about the comic strip hero and is one of the high-water marks for the series and for the superhero genre because it is able to simultaenously combine the goofiness of the comic strip, the melancholy of lost love, romantic ideal, a frightening, diabolical meance, intense action and an emotionally fulfilling ending.
Critics said that self-pity is the central theme which is harsh because it is the weight of responsibility, and that Tobey Maguire is a tad weightless in his delivery, when really he recovers his confidence with a determination that isn't out of character.
Technically, it has Academy award winning special effects used with restraint, and superbly directed by Sam Raimi.

This is disappointing compared to the first Spider-Man (with Tobey Maguire) which I thought was an amazing superhero movie... but it's still a fine movie and leaps better than Spider-Man 3, which I really hated.Worth watching for sure but don't expect it to match or really even come close to the first movie.

This is a film that once you start watching it, you cannot stop. It is a surprisingly stunning film, both for its emotionally resonant melodrama and for its visually dazzling special effects. The protagonist struggles between being Spider-Man and being Peter Parker. Being a Spider-Man requires fighting against the villains and saving the civilians. Being Peter Parker demands a quiet life with Mary Jane. There are just tons of proverbs or mottos in the film: the screenplay, particularly the dialogue design, is simply amazing. The design of the villain is also fantastic, and is kind of unique in the history of superhero movies.

I love this movie so much! I love all of the characters and the CGI is amazing for the year the movie was released. I watch this movie at least once a year and I still wish Tobey Maguire was playing the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man today. I love the ending and how it sets up the next installment so perfectly. I love the gritty feel of this movie and you can feel the pain and intensity with every fight scene between Spider-Man and Doc Ock. My favorite Spider-Man movie of all-time!!!!! Watch this movie if you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend it to fans of Spider-Man and comic book movie fans.
