Reviews

Clifton Johnson This film was way too sentimental and tried way too hard. That said, Murray and McCarthy gave amazing performances that buoyed almost every scene (and the soundtrack didn't hurt either). It was far from perfect, but it would have been an unmitigated disaster without those actors. Sometimes a simple set-up and great performances is enough to (mostly) redeem a movie.
Anthony Iessi If you came for Bill Murray, you won't be too disappointed. If you came for anything else, keep walking. This is phony, feel-good, message-at-the-end, holiday season trite. It's Hollywood's interpretation of "the struggle" of the average suburban kid moving to the big city. How many times have we seen that? When Bill Murray is on screen, it felt like Bad Santa with none of the filthy language and disgusting antics. Without Murray, it's a Lifetime network cut of a lost Judd Apatow movie. Chris O'Dowd even plays a Irish-Catholic school teacher... uh, typecasting much? A half hour was all I needed. It wasn't going to get any better.
sbsieber Melissa McCarthy shows a real knack for dramatic acting; I like her better in this movie than most of her other comedic roles. Lots of movie clichés in St. Vincent, in fact the entire premise is a cliché, but it's fun, heartwarming, and entertaining. Bill Murray has perfected his lovable grouch persona and is revealed to be, a modern day saint despite his despicable characteristics. My biggest objection: he gets "Sainthood Points" for visiting his wife, who suffers from some form of dementia, (yet manages to still look flawlessly beautiful), once a week, while also "entertaining" a Russian hooker the rest of the time. Not sure how saintly this is; my father-in-law visits his wife several times a day while she's in long term care, and has been doing it for years. Perhaps we should award him a sainthood medal.
emil10 I've got to say this one of my favourite movies in the last 10 years. First of all it tells such an amazing story, and has everything you would want in a movie. Considering I don't usually get emotional at movies there where parts of this I was holding back the tears. The performance from Bill Murray is outstanding, and the actor playing 'Oliver' the main kid is something special and he has a very bright future ahead. The film is also hilarious at some brilliant moments of comedy, however the way the film builds to do the speech at the end, and the relationship both Vincent and Oliver have is incredible. I don't usually write reviews, and know this film has had its nominations, however still believe the credit it has received is no where near what it deserves. All I can say is if you're looking for a fun, heart warming film that makes you have a different perspective on life this is the one. I've seen it twice and could watch this over and over, im telling you, you will not regret it.
