one-nine-eighty Written and directed by Craig Mazin this is a spoof movie much like Scary Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, etc. The film follows the Spiderman tried and tested formula. As an audience we follow Rick Ryker who has been left an orphan to be raised by his aunt and uncle. On a school field trip he is bitten by a mutated dragonfly which bestows on him great powers. As you know by now, with great powers comes great yada yada blah blah. Rick becomes a superhero and tries to save the day from Lou Landers, a.k.a. Hourglass, his evil nemesis while desperately trying to win the affection of his attractive neighbour. Despite having David Zucker and Lesley Nielson attached to this film it was nowhere near the league of the "Airplane!" or "Naked Gun" movies which was a sad shame. More dumb than fun this film tries to use slapstick and witty humour throughout but falls short by a long way, in fact a lot of the film is very predictable and there for slightly boring too. There are a lot of cultural references and nods to other superhero films but not in a clever way at all so it makes the film feel like it's a desperate sibling nagging for attention just to justify it. If you haven't guessed by now I didn't really enjoy this; I can deal with the crass fart jokes and I can deal with the whiny stereotypical characters throughout. What upset me the most was the wasted opportunity. With so many superhero movies out there now this film could have been soo much more but as a satirical poke at them it falls flat on its toothless face. Sorry, I can only give this 3 out of 10 because I'd have been happy to turn it off or fall asleep instead. I can't say I'd recommend this, and I definitely won't be rushing to watch this again.
lolidunno16 Whilst this film probably won't appeal to adults, it certainly will appeal to 12-13 year olds. (but this film is NOT for small kids). I myself was 12 when I first saw this film and I was laughing endlessly from start to finish. Obviously nowadays the sex jokes and toilet humour isn't so funny any more. This film is almost ALL sex and toilet humour. And despite the stigmas, some people just happen to like this kind of thing! If you happen to be one of those people, then GO WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW. If you don't like toilet humour, just don't even bother. Stay far away from this film.I disagree on this movie's IMDb rating. I think even though I've matured and don't find toilet humour that funny any more, it's still good for what it is. This isn't a fantastic movie, but it's a good one that will lift your spirits (unless you've just lost a parent).
Terry-lee Thurlow (The-Stalingraduates-review) i was surfing through netflix when i came across the aforementioned film, Superhero movie. i remember watching this film a few years back but i barely remembered anything about it. i remembered that the recent 'movie' films have all been disgusting pieces of cinematic Hitler, but i saw that David Zucker of 'airplane' and 'naked gun' fame was directing and it also had Leslie Nielsen, so i set my hopes for somewhere in the middle. The result:It works!! its a recent spoof comedy thats actually worth watching!!granted it still falls into the same trap of making pop culture references, but there aren't enough to make it a total hindrance. it is very hit and miss, but actually hits more often than one would think. Drake Bell's performance was entertaining, but a good portion of his jokes are just looking awkward or disgusted, which once again, is hit and miss. I also enjoyed Leslie Nielsen's performance, but it was sad to see some of the material he had to do, but apart from that his world famous timing is impeccable.overall, when its funny, its pretty damn funny, but when it flops, it really flops. it has the heart of the old spoof comedies which really adds to the film and makes it worthwhile to watch, but don't expect utter genius. put your standards in the middle, put your feet up, grab a beer and a joint and just relax and watch, you'll get more laughs than you'll expect.
Raul Faust Superhero Movie is another spoof movie that makes you really laugh. It's very dumb, and also very re-mindful of the past "Scary Movie"'s. Maybe because of Regina Hall, maybe because of the writer/director, but it works just as good as them. This film spoofed many internet things that spread not only in the USA, but all over the world. The youtube seek for success, the google domination and the myspace seek for fame are very well spoofed and I remember as it was yesterday when it came out. I saw it in the theaters, these jokes were very appropriated for that time. Unfortunately, many people that get to see this film now won't find it as funny as it was back when released, since they won't understand these jokes very precisely. That's what I mean when I say that "Superhero Movie" gets old so quickly. Moreover, I still have many laughs watching it and it's certainly a good time provider :)
