Graxxor Anandro Vidhelssen One minor spolier, but certainly nothing to dull your enjoyment of this film.As the trailer and plot intro suggest, the concept is decent enough, the technology is plausible and the premise is sound, if a rather corny in a hackneyed, Hunger Games sort of way.No surprises there. It is exactly as they say.The characters check most of the boxes in the mandatory Unitest States Liberal PC diversity checklist... But it was hard to empathise with them since themselves are effectively roleplaying their gamer alter egos. It is only in the last half that we learn anything about them. Here is the one minor spoiler, though it is pretty obviously only a few minutes away.As usual, the black man, the only true dies first, protecting his whities and proving to all that this is more than a game.Sigh..The ending is nothing special and unfortunately seems to be bolted on.This film had the potential to be interesting in a TRON sort of way, but fell short and is not worth a more in depth review or analysis.Best watched with beer.
flatbeddriver Never leave reviews but had to after watching this. I very much enjoyed the story line, effects, and acting. This movie is seriously underrated. Morfydd Clark is an actress I'd never heard of and found her both gorgeous and entertaining. I'd like to see more of her work. Definitely worth relaxing and watching.
stevenrotherforth The Call upUsually whenever a movie like this comes along I will give it a wide berth. Low budget, unheard of actors, untested director and a storyline that has potential but you just know it's going to be ruined by the aforementioned factors. The Call up does have an intriguing premise. Especially since the world we live in is becoming overwhelmed with technology and the youth of today would rather play football on a computer than out in a field. The Call up tells the story of Elite gamers from around the world that are chosen to try out a new kind of virtual reality gaming system. It is so advanced it becomes very difficult to differentiate between pixels and pores. The participants are required to adorn futuristic gaming suits that immerse them in a virtual world where they are required to fight there way out of a terrorist infested building. It soon becomes apparent that the game will not let them go and simulated pain hurts just as much as the real thing. With fellow comrades actually suffering and dying for real the remaining survivors battle to stay alive as they realise there's no escaping the virtual world they are trapped in.The Call up is an interesting film, one that suffers from lack of investment. The unknown actors and all involved making this low budget Sci-fi do a decent job with the resources that they have. I do believe that with a bigger budget and slicker production that this film wouldn't have been condemned to late night re-runs on the Syfy channel or demotion to the DVD bargain bin. It's very difficult for an audience to invest when there's a lack of investment from the producers of the film. Special effects are adequate but practical effects, set design and costume design look as though they came from a 1980's B movie. A shame really as this film could have been much better with a little added garnish. By no means skip this movie. Give it a go but just open your mind to what it could have been.
sushhebdhdhjd I have never written a review before. I probably won't again. But this movie was truly awful. I mean if when I say do not waste your time. The plot twist - that the game actually kills people - is revealed in the first act. The rest of the movie is so boring. I saw this as the concept was really cool, and I was so disappointed. I kept watching expecting it to get better - maybe there was a further plot twist. Nope, just that one of the players was running it - shocking . The movie ends with the winning player killing the creator of the game and leaving the building. That's it. I could not believe such a poorly made move exists. I am usually not very critical of movies, I enjoy many low budget, cheesy movies but this was just too far. 1 dimensional characters in a 1 dimension plot. Very poor production. Good things about it? Ummmmmmm.......I didn't find the actors as bad as some of the other posters say they were (they were still bad, but I've seen worse). I have a pretty high tolerance for bad acting though. My 1 star rating is based on writing mostly, as well as directing. The special effects were decent, but this is proof that CGI is worthless without a good storyline. One of the worst, most predictable, and boring story lines I have seen in a while.
