Reno Rangan I won't say it is an overrated film, but it simply did not work for me. The same director who had made 'Calvary' directed this one as well with Brendon Gleeson in the lead, but that was an earlier project to this one. I loved that film, not this one, though I consider it an average, because I did not find it bad. The theme was very familiar, and too much wasted scenes with the slow narration spoiled my mood. There's no clear perspective of the storytelling, just it concentrated on a small town cop and his single life, and rarely he fights the crime. When an FBI agent comes looking for some international drug dealers, a cop in a small Irish town braced to assist the American officer. Though he never cared to involve in it. He follows his usual lifestyle, enjoying every moment of his life. After a woman comes asking to find his cop husband gone missing, he now gets into the action. How serious he makes progress in the case and its result is the rest of the film to disclose. It's not as funny as I anticipated. But watchable film for its quality narration. The actors were just okay. The characters were really weak, particularly the villains. They occasionally appear and gone for forever, and then there comes the final battle. Did not sync well between them and the cop, especially what they were fighting for, other than they are. Especially the FBI agent played by Don Cheadle casting was worthless. For a fine theme like this, the plot should have developed with at least a couple of twists and maybe a grand action sequence. It does not matter though, at least engaging plot needed, but failed on that part. Sorry to say that I'm not in favour of it to suggest it to anybody, though you might it better than me.5/10
barbara-364 Seeing the Guard was on Film 4 I decided to watch it for the second time. The first time I saw it, it was on TV and I had half a mind to switch it off because of the swearing in it from the beginning, but the subtle humour and the story was so good, I watched it to the end. I like the ironic humour in it. The drug smuggling gang discussing philosophy in the car. The IRA man querying the loss of the Kalashnikov and then it turns up later for the FBi man to use. Why the IRA use the little hand guns to attract MI5 agents. His mum waiting to confess to being in a orgy. The couple who only speak gaelic to the FBi agent and others who are so unhelpful, he eventually tries talking to a horse. And the main character, Boyle, a loose cannon, a maverick, but he gets the gang. This is a brilliantly scripted film with a great narrative and the tremendous scenery of the west of Ireland. There are so many memorable scenes in it. The little boy who finds the cache of weapons in a peat bog and tries to pocket a small hand gun. The IRA man who turns up in a VW beetle and goes to open the engine to put the cache of weapons in. The best and most unexpected bit is when Boyle seems to be at the mercy of the philosophical psychopath and has the small hand gun where he has been told "gay" IRA men put them when they go to meet MI5 agents... you need to watch the film to find out what happens next and the best thing about this film is, you are never quite sure what will happen next. film to find out what happens next...
tomgillespie2002 To paraphrase The Guard's FBI Agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle), this movie is either really motherf****n' smart, or really motherf****n' dumb. Having laughed my way throughout the majority of it, my feet are firmly in the former camp, with Brendan Gleeson's towering performance and writer/director John Michael McDonagh's extremely witty script make this one of the most under-appreciated movies of 2011. It is, on the surface, a simple fish out of water story crossed with a mismatched buddy comedy. But with a self awareness that brings to mind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), The Guard often feels like it's more intelligent than it's letting on, similar in many ways to it's morally shady protagonist.Gerry Boyle (Gleeson) is not your everyday Garda (Gaelic for 'policeman') . As he expressionlessly watches a car load of weed- toking yoofs crash and die, he helps himself to the insides of their pockets and finds some acid, which he promptly swallows without thinking twice. He cares about his terminally ill mother, so we know he's at least not all bad. His laid-back attitude to law enforcement is threatened by the arrival of the eager Aidan McBride (Rory Keenan) from Dublin, as well as a murder that may point to the work of an occult serial killer. There's also more drugs on the streets than ever before, but Gerry enjoys those almost as much as he enjoys his hookers. If the witty yet crass dialogue spouting from this grumpy collections of Irishmen sounds somewhat familiar, then this is probably because John Michael's brother Martin McDonagh penned and directed In Bruges (2008), which also starred Gleeson. In my opinion, The Guard is better and certainly funnier. Most of the humour stems from Gerry himself and the way he plays with the characters he interacts with as much as the audience themselves. With the news that international drug traffickers are heading to Connemara to make a multi-million (or billion, no-one seems to know) dollar deal, FBI Agent Everett arrives to brief the guard's on the situation. When the dealers appear on the projector as Liam Cunningham and Mark Strong, Gerry's response is "But I thought all drug-dealers were black?".It may seem somewhat bad taste humour, but the way Gleeson delivers his lines, and the reaction by Cheadle (who plays the straight-man extremely well), make for comedy gold. Gerry is everything Everett despises - bigoted, ignorant - but the loathing changes to curiosity as he witnesses Gerry do some good police work and appears to be the only one who cares. Is he putting on an act to catch people off- guard? Is he really an idiot with a natural instinct for detective work? Or is he a bit both? I can forgive it's formulaic shoot-out ending for suspicion that it may be mocking the type of films it's emulating. After all, this is a fish-out-of-water-story where the main character verbally acknowledges that he's in a fish-out-of- water story. I'm sticking with really motherf****n' smart.www.the-wrath-of-blog.blogspot.com
LeonLouisRicci This Film was Made in Ireland by Irishmen. The Accents are as Thick as the Profanity in this Satirical Ethnic Crime Film. There is a lot of Humor Derived from Stereotypical Racism, so if that Offends, Stay Away from this. Ditto if Four Letter Words Turn You off.At Times Raunchy, but it is All Done with such Light-Heartedness that it Smooths Over Quite Nicely. Brenden Gleeson's Star Turn is Admirable and Along with the Sharp and Delightful Cinematography Carry the Show. There is a Bit of Bite to the Dialog and the Film Fluctuates from Warm-Hearted Taking Care of Mom Stuff to Philosophical Rants from Unlikely Criminals and Such, a Modern Flourish that hasn't Worn Out its Welcome.Don Cheadle Plays Don Cheadle and is there Mostly to take the Brunt of Gleeson's Riffs on Drugs, Sex, Race, Crime, and Corruption. The Film Stays Fresh in a Genre and Style that is Getting Quite Old but Still has some Staying Power when it is done with Wit and Heart.
