Reviews

areatw The fact that the word 'forgettable' appears in just about every review for this film says a lot about how unoriginal and lazy it is. I can't remember the last time I watched an animated film and couldn't wait for it to finish, but that's how I felt about 'The Nut Job'.The animation in this film is great, but it's not enough to distract away from the complete lack of a plot. Characters often make or break animated films and, writing this review a day after watching the film, I can't remember any of the characters or their names.'The Nut Job' is watchable but will probably be enjoyed much more by kids. The only thing I enjoyed about this film was the animation - the plot and characters were completely... forgettable.
adonis98-743-186503 An incorrigibly self-serving exiled squirrel finds himself helping his former park brethren raid a nut store to survive, that is also the front for a human gang's bank robbery. The Nut Job is one of the most underrated animated films of the last couple of years and i don't get it why it got so many bad reviews i seriously laughed threw out the whole thing, the characters were well written and the whole plot although it was recycled from other animated movies of the past it still worked. The voice cast was really good for the most part and i really can't find anything bad about this film it was funny, full of adventure and even sad when it was needed and i'm gonna give it an 10/10.
Python Hyena The Nut Job (2014): Dir: Peter Lepeniotis / Voices: Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser, Liam Neeson, Maya Rudolph: Animation about creative minds and merging ideas for the greater good. Surly the gray squirrel is banished from the park after his umpteenth mishap results in the destruction of all the food for the animals for the winter. Accompanied by his rat friend Buddy, he comes across a heist in progress where nuts are used to conceal bags of cash. Premise is simple but structure is detailed as Surely attempts to outwit the criminals and steal the nuts. The climax is ridiculous and somewhat predictable as anyone can see that Surely will become a hero, prove himself, and learn that working together has greater benefits. The animation is colourful and detailed with very little to caution families whom the film is aimed at. Characters are a mixed bag of interesting to downright cardboard. Will Arnett voices Surely who aims to work alone but realizes that when the stakes are against him that accepting help is never a shame. What does come across though is Surely's obvious skill that the other animals fade in comparison. Katherine Heigl voices red squirrel Andie who believes in Surely but the character is flat. Liam Neeson voicing the corrupt leader Raccoon is also bland. Brendan Fraser provides humour voicing Grayson, who conceals his cowardly nature under heroics. Maya Rudolph voices a dog named Precious who assists Surely despite her owners being the criminals. Outrageous animated comedy about using one's talent to help others regardless of how nutty the circumstances. Score: 7 ½ / 10
David Arnold A city park squirrel, Surly, has gone too far with his latest caper leading to the animal community's winter food cache being destroyed. Exiled from the park by Raccoon, Surly and his rat sidekick, Buddy, have to find a way to survive on the streets. However, all is OK again when they see a local nut store. Meanwhile, park squirrels, Andie and Grayson, have been charged by Raccoon to find a new food source which inevitably leads to them crossing paths with Surly. Andie soon learns of Surly's plan of a nut heist, so she convinces Surly into working together to share the booty. However, after this discovery, Raccoon puts his own side agenda into place. Will everything work out OK, or will Surly and Andie be double-crossed by Raccoon? The Nut Job is a delve back to the old types of cartoons like Road Runner and Tom & Jerry as it's very much a slapstick type of animated comedy. This is like the squirrel version of The Three Stooges as it contains a lot of that type of comedy. Lots of banging into & sliding down walls/glass, slaps, hits, punches etc with a good few fart jokes added for good measure. The humour in the film is a bit rude at times, but unless you're a prude there is no harm at all in letting younger kids watch this, especially as the toilet humour here is no worse than what it's like in Shrek, for example. There's no real complaints about the film for me, and while I don't dislike Brendan Fraser, I don't think he's that funny, so when I saw his name in the opening credits a slight "oh no" did enter my mind. Thankfully he's not bad here and he does a pretty decent job.I guess there may not be anything utterly original here story wise, but with a really good voice cast, some good funny characters (especially the cardinal) and great animation, especially on Blu-ray, you can do much, much worse than The Nut Job.Not absolutely fantastic but it's definitely worth a watch and it definitely has more than just a giggle here and there.
