Alex Abara "The Stepford Wives" was a shocking and very disturbing book and film. The material has been watered down with many TV-movie sequels. Where the original film the men where actually killing their wives and replacing them with "PERFECT ROBOTS".This film just like the TV-movies instead of "killing the women" they were brainwashed. However in the TV-movies it was okay because they stuck with that concept. Here they seem to be robots (Hello one wife becomes an atm) but later we find out she is just brainwashed. This film sucks and I am glad it tanked!
Dave Trying to remake this story as a comedy was obviously a stupid idea. Creating a remake to be significantly different from the original is one thing; to change the genre completely doesn't work.Nicole Kidman has acted very well in many roles - but she's awful in this.
aliuelic I watched The Stepford Wives because of Bree Van De Camp in Desperate Housewives who I kinda like. However, the wives of Stepford are absolutely ridiculous. You don't even know those so-called perfect women are robots or human beings! At least, Bree is an emotional character, a human of flesh and blood. What's more, it seems to me that this film is a stigmatization of feminism.
karen5778 This movie is just an excuse for a bunch of jokes about sexism, which is exactly what we wanted. The jokes are good and the humor is never scatological. The characters are fairly well drawn though hardly complex. On the whole it is above average for a genre, the cutesy remake, which tends to be horrible. If you have any ideas about how you would do a new Stepford Wives you will probably be disappointed and annoyed. There is relatively little social commentary or suspense, in fact the only suspenseful scene is just funny. The hows and whats of what the ladies are isn't really addressed much, in part because it would be more disturbing than this movie wants to be. On the other hand, it never breaks character, so you can just cruise comfortably to the end, laughing every minute or so.As a professional horticulturist, I must mention the plantings and flower arrangements. The orchids were just becoming available at grocery stores and the gladiolus in the "plantings" must have been hand placed in some cases, cause they don't grow in graceful sprays. Someone did an awesome job.
