Python Hyena Tooth Fairy (2010): Dir: Michael Lembeck / Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd, Stephen Merchant, Julie Andrews, Billy Crystal: Moronic family film about a reality check, only its fantasy elements wayward that theme. Frankly, it is the audience whom will receive the biggest reality check when they realize that they spent ten dollars on this tooth decay. Dwayne Johnson plays Derek Thompson, a hockey player called the Tooth Fairy. He is called this because he knocks teeth out of opposing players. When his attitude is reduce to crushing dreams, he is given a summons to become a tooth fairy. Plot is preposterous and structure is repetitious to Thompson receiving inconvenient calls into fairy action and disastrous visitations to retain a tooth. Predictable and boring with director Michael Lembeck doing his best despite the lame special effects. Johnson applies his charm and actually appears to be having fun despite appearing in a tutu. Ashley Judd as his girlfriend is completely wasted. Here is an actress who not long before was a lead player. This is a very bad career move. Stephen Merchant as Thompson's contact Tracy comes off as creepy. He desires to earn wings and become a real tooth fairy. What he really should desire is a new agent. Julie Andrews as the fairy Queen is a nice touch but flat role. Billy Crystal gives Johnson the instructions he needs in order to be an effective tooth fairy. It is unfortunate that he could not gravitate him towards a better script. This is not a film that anyone involved will want mentioned during any career honor broadcast. This cavity laden crap should be pulled from existence. Score: 2 ½ / 10
sddavis63 So this is not a great movie, and it will never be mistaken for one. I'd agree with that assessment. But it is kind of cute and it is very silly, and when you look at it as a movie that's basically there to appeal to kids (because there's really nothing in it for adults) you have to at least concede that cute and silly is not a bad combination for a kids movie. So this may not be great, but it's not really bad, in that it serves its purpose: it's a kid-friendly movie. Nothing wrong with that. Now, from an adult's point of view, the story which revolves around hockey player Derek Thompson - played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - being sentenced to work as a tooth fairy for a couple of weeks as punishment for "disseminating disbelief" is pretty lame and the performances are generally forgettable. I was completely unconvinced of the need for the hockey angle, and frankly it was done badly. The on ice action was poorly portrayed (although the scene in which Thompson takes his revenge on the 18 year old whiz kid - Ryan Sheckler - was pretty funny) and, really, how could Thompson play 9 seasons without a single shot? 9 seasons without a goal maybe, but this guy seemed to get enough ice time, at least as an enforcer and bodyguard for his team's better players, so somewhere along the lines he's going to pick up the odd rebound and get a shot. This is mildly humorous every now and then, and considering how silly it really is it has some surprisingly recognizable faces in the cast - including Julie Andrews and Billy Crystal. I'd give it a 4/10 - but it's not a bad choice to sit down and watch this with your kids.
Tim Kidner There's quite a lot to like in this fun comedy, but I'm an adult who usually goes for Tarantino or Fellini. There's also quite a lot that is a bit painful. One liners playing on the word 'tooth' for starters! There's some inspired casting - not just the Rock but Stephen Merchant and Julie Andrews. It was Merchant, all 6'7" (his character has him as 6'9"!) ganglyness of him as Dwayne Johnson's (The Tooth Fairy) fairy probation officer that kept me watching. Andrews, as the Fairy Godmother (the boss of the Tooth service) is a nice touch.Johnson, in bright blue tutu, tights and wings looks ridiculous, of course and sends it up well. Kids will find his miniaturisation and other grotesque special effects funny and engaging.I'm not usually in a habit of watching kid's films (I have none to share it with) but as it was on Sky Movies, thought I'd give it a try. It's generally likable, most kids will enjoy it, but you won't find me buying it on DVD.
Maniac-9 While it's better then most family related movies(which isn't a very big compliment), I would have to guess that this movie was done by Dwayne Johnson as a contractual obligation. He did The Game Plan and Race to Witch Mountain which are also Disney movies so I'm assuming this was just to fulfill a 3 picture deal he had with Disney. While it's still a serviceable movie it's not the genre of movies that Rocky is best equipped at. He's definitely good in movies where he uses his comedy but he also needs to do some action work like how he's now going to be a part of the G.I. Joe and Fast & Furious franchises. I think Dwayne might be wise to try to get a role if they do an Expendables 3 movie. Seeing him on screen with the likes of Stallone, Willis and Arnold would be a nice passing of the torch kind of thing going on.
