wje-882-971136 While some (obviously inferior) people pan this movie, I think it's absolutely hilarious. Come on, Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis (in her only good role), Joseph Bologna, Ed Begley Jr., the incomparable Carol Kane... how does it get any better? Oh, right, it does; the theme song. The fabulous Pennsylvania 6-5000 by Glenn Miller in 1940. Hey, that's my ringtone. And, by the way, that's a real phone number... it is the (translate to modern numbering) the Hotel Pennsylvania in NYC. So there. In any case, this is really classic slapstick, and it has so many references to other works you can watch it many times and still find new ones. Dang, I think I'll watch it again now.
capone666 Transylvania 6-5000Flights to Transylvania are typically the only ones that airlines will allow passengers to carry wooden stakes and guns loaded with silver-bullets on.Unfortunately, the tabloid reporters on assignment in this horror-comedy only packed their flash bulb camera. After their ornery editor (Norman Fell) comes in contact with video documentation of Frankenstein, he sends his goof-off son Gil (Ed Begley Jr.) and a hardnosed newsman Jack (Jeff Goldblum) to the Romanian countryside.Once in Transylvania, Jack and Gil encounter a gypsy who encourages their investigation.Digging deeper, they come across an unhinged physician (Joseph Bologna) determined to socialize the creatures he created in his experiments, including a werewolf, a sea-monster and a vivacious vampire (Geena Davis).A saucy send-up of classic horror archetypes, this screwball comedy is highlighted by some great comedic performances and adult oriented humour.Incidentally, tabloids today would only be interested in monsters caught without their makeup.(Yellow Light)vidiotreviews.blogspot.ca
Aaron1375 Kind of surprised it scored so low here as I thought it was rather funny. Granted the last time I watched it I was just a kid, still for the most part this movie cracked me up. Listed as a horror as one of its genres, it most certainly has no horror in it, or even any dark spells for that matter. The movie centers around two journalists for a tabloid type newspaper. Well one is kind of the editor's son and is kind of forced on the other guy. They are sent to Transylvania because of a video that seems to have the legendary monster Frankenstein in it. Well they get to town and they discover its many colorful characters including a rather strange mayor, a butler that performs very bad practical jokes and a super sexy vampire girl. The also have a very humorous run in with a couple in the bushes as they try and track down the wolf man. For the most part the movie is funny, though there are a lot of groan inducing scenes to be had too. The highlights for me was the discovery of the couple and the next trip to the fortune teller after that, the leg joke by the butler, and the scene where the one guy went nuts every time he entered his fathers laboratory. Gena Davis also looks very nice as the vampire hottie too so you have a bit of everything. Though the story is kind of all over the place which may be a reason this film does have such a low score.
jehood73 This movie just cracks me up! It's the first time I saw Michael Richards (Kramer on Seinfeld)--he plays one of the goofiest characters. You have to watch this movie with the idea that it is a goofy movie. If you go into it thinking it's serious, you are sadly mistaken and will miss out on a lot of good humor!!!The team of Ed Begley, Jr and Jeff Goldlum as the two main characters was a great match. They contrast and complement each other well. With Jeff's sarcasm and Ed's seriousness you are bound to laugh at something one of these two guys say. Other characters that make this movie hilarious are Jeffery Jones as Mayor Lepescu and the hilarious "lower than low" couple, Lupi and Radu, played by Carol Kane and John Byner. Check it out. If you enjoy slapstick comedy, "meditating", and "Dracula", then you will get a kick out of this movie.
