kapelusznik18 ***SPOILERS*** These three hoods Harper Dill & Chapman, Stephen McNally Lee Marvin & J. Carroll Nash, case out the Bradenville City Bank that's to be open on Saturday until noon planning to knock it off as soon as the doors close. To make their getaway they earlier took mine engineer Shelly Martin, Victor Mature, hostage as well as carjacked his car to make their getaway. To round out this perfect crime on their part they also hold Shelly and a local Amish family hostage knowing that there's no telephone service at their farm to call the police.Right for the start the robbery goes bust with the trigger happy Dill blowing two persons away one the nerdy and Peeping Tom bank manager Harry Reeves, Tommy Noonman, who survived and Emily Fairchild, Margaret Hayes, who didn't who was the wife of the richest man in town copper mine owner Boyd Fairchild, Richard Egan. It's the womanizing Boyd who was was having an not so secret affair with nurse Linda Sherman, Virginia Leith! By the way it was nurse Sherman who Peeping Tom Reeves , who watched her undress in her apartment while walking his dog, had the hots for but didn't have the nerve to approach her and ask her out for a date; The schmuck was married and his wife would have killed him if she found out about it. It's at the Amish farm that the tired up and blindfold Shelly made his attempted escape by having the hood guarding it, the 4th member of the bank robbery quartet, Slick, Boyd Morgan, crushed to death with a barrel filled with horse manure, what a way to go!, and then untying the Amish family headed by patriarch Farmer Stadt, Ernest Borgnine, as the three remaining bank robbers headed back for the place.***SPOILERS***Wild and bloody shootout as Shelly held off the hoods who needed the keys, that was on the late Slick, for Farmer Stadt hay wagon, in this case Stadt did give into modern science, to make their getaway, the cops already had the description of Shelly's stolen car, go un-noticed. With everything looking bad for Shelly, after he knock off both Chapman & Harper, as the trigger happy and blood thirsty Dill was about to plug him it was the peaceful and non violent Farmer Stadt who saved the day as well as Sehlly's life. This was something totally against Farmer Stadt's nature and morels but there's times in everyones life, even the peace loving and non violent Farmer Stadt, that one's "Gotta Do what he's Gotta Do" and in the end Farmer Stadt reluctantly did it!
bkoganbing The town of Bradenville is in for a Violent Saturday because three men, Stephen McNally, Lee Marvin, and J. Carrol Naish have come to town to rob their bank. McNally is the brains of the trio and for any number of reasons including the town's isolation, small police force, and the fact that the bank is open on Saturday until noon have made him determine this is the place for a stickup. He's even got a fourth guy Richey Murray staked out at an Amish farm holding the farmer Enest Borgnine and his family hostage, picked because of its isolation and the fact they have no electricity or modern communication to send up an alarm. But this is some town Bradenville, while we see the bank robbers carefully timing out their job, we also get a glimpse of Bradenville's citizenry. Quite a little Peyton Place that town is.Richard Fleischer as director managed to skilfully combine a soap opera and a crime caper film and it works. The script is very tight, not one frame of film is wasted. We get any number of interesting side stories in the 90 minute time of the film that do not detract in any way from the caper portion.Victor Mature is the nominal hero of the piece, he gets carjacked and kidnapped, but proves to be a bit more than the robbers can handle. Ernest Borgnine stands out in the cast as the Amish father who has to question the pacifist tenets of his faith to protect his home and family.A little bit of noir, a little bit of soap opera mixed very well in a good thriller of a film in Violent Saturday.
k-thomas This is what people want to see in a movie. A good story which is what is missing in films today. You have the family man played by Victor Mature having problems with his son over the fact that he is ashamed of his father for not receiving anything during the war, but his friends father received a medal of honor at Iwo Jima. A successful Businessman, played by Richard Egan, whose wife is having an affair with another man played by Brad Dexter and other story lines surrounding a small town in the mid-west of America of the 1950's. Suddenly their lives are changed by the arrival of a gang of hoodlums robbing the town bank. In this movie you haven"t got machine guns blazing, blood spattered bodies everywhere, foul language all the time and nudity, which is all you get today. It's about time movie makers gave the public what they want in a movie like this one and and not what they want to give the public, just for a quick buck. I think if movie makers made more films such as this for an example, they will surprised how much money they could make. Lets get back to the old Hollywood. A film with a good beginning, middle and end and some fine acting and directing to go with it. I hope this comment is helpful. Kevin Thomas.
whpratt1 This film held my interest from the very beginning to the very end. The cast was comprised of all great veteran actors of the silver screen. The story is about a small Western town with everyday living people who are having trouble with their marriages and at the same time some bandits decide to hold up the local bank and are busy at work making their plans. In many ways, the town people can be glad a bank was held up which changed the lives of many people who were having problems. An Amish family was depicted in this film and the bandits even broke them away from their customs of living. This is a very well written story and a top cast of actors who have made this a gem of a picture to watch and Enjoy.
