Amy Edwards As as I'm not a true big fan of the man, I haven't taken the time to watch the movie before now. I was afraid that this movie would serve as a way to restore a little the image of George W. Bush and it's not falling far from here as I now saw it.I've seen many biopics about the famous people who were an active part of the history of the country. Every time, it was treated with depth and kept being really objective. But there, it's looking like unfinished. Most of his career is overlooked. Not any mention about his oil businessman success story. His governorship is really depicted poorly. We don't even see him getting elected president. 9/11 was the most important event of his presidency, the one which changed it all and made it what it was but still except of mentioning it during several exchanges with his cabinet, we don't see any scene about that day nor his declaration of war against Afghanistan. The only real focus was the war in Iraq explained in a very simplistic way. About that fact, I have also my grief. Oliver Stone wants to make us believe that Bush was just a puppet of his cabinet. Someone who just jumps in because he's told so. I have my doubt about that. Sure W is not very bright but come on he is not that gullible even from my point of view. He was a governor and a pretty acclaimed one before he was elected to the Presidency. He inspired some leadership. He must have had some control of his policy as President of the United States. The only thing they got their part right is Colin Powell who was maybe the smartest of the Cabinet and the only one who expressed doubts about the WMDs in Iraq but was shut off by Cheney, Rice and ultimately Bush. That was the only part I really liked. But the rest seems to be pure propaganda.I feared that it could be that way and i wasn't wrong. Like the real President himself, this movie will definitely not be a part of my favorites.
Python Hyena W. (2008): Dir: Oliver Stone / Cast: Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Banks, James Cromwell, Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Burstyn: Satire view of President George W. Bush with flashbacks to his younger days in a fraternity, to his shaky relationship with his father, to his failures with the war in Iraq. This is all very curios and it starts out with appeal but then it becomes choppy where scenes aren't followed up such as the scene where he chokes on a pretzel, or the outside jog where he passes out. Directed by Oliver Stone who is all over the place. It is as if he attempts to jam as much of Bush's life into one movie regardless how it fit. This is not Stone's first Presidential film. He previously made J.F. K and Nixon. He does highlight the youthfulness of Bush, played with appeal by Josh Brolin who brings a certain comical edge to Bush's desires and accomplishments. Elizabeth Banks plays Laura Bush in a departure from her usual romantic comedy flare. James Cromwell is terrific as the frustrated Bush Sr who cannot seem to straighten out his drunken son and get him to take life seriously. Then there is Richard Dreyfuss as the extremely criticized Dick Cheney. Ellen Burstyn is featured as Barbara Bush who witnesses the confrontations between father and son. Doesn't always work but it gives an often amusing look at a President that was seen as not being with it. Score: 7 / 10
kai ringler Not sure which way I am leaning on this one,, first off I don't think that Oliver Stone accurately portrayed Bush in certain circumstances, like for instance to say that he wasn't at fault for thing in the Iraqi war is preposterous. it seems like the movie is Bush propaganda to say the least,, the interesting part of the movie was when he was in college and stuff and being governor of Texas,, the running for President all of that was cool,, but the way the Presidency was handled felt like the movie wanted you to feel sorry for the man and like him, which I can't stand him to be honest, he's the worst President we've had in 40 years bar none,, Nixon was better,, Carter, Ford, Bush 1 Obama , Clinton , and so on, I thought Oliver Stone would have took a more accurate approach on the Presidency side of things, but I guess he decided not to,, all in all though a very fascinating look at the everyday life of a President and what happens in the Oval Office,, I give it a middle of the road rating.
Rex Black Just like artists at theme parks draw exaggerated portraits, this film offers a caricature of George W Bush at best. Many scenes are designed to paint a picture of Bush in a negative light with obvious intentions. A few SPOILER examples: Close up of W talking with his mouth full of food, showing W getting briefly lost on familiar land, conversation with Cheney over lunch where he takes lettuce out of his sand which based on hypothetical discussion- showing the deep persuasion Bush was supposedly under. Did these things really happen? They all seemed artificially constructed to give false credit to ideas of the caricature this film is selling of W.Political agenda of the film aside--- It was entertaining to watch. Though I disagree strongly with Josh Brolin's personal and political opinions, I do think he did well to capture several of the mannerisms of W as well as his accent and vocal delivery. Overall, i was glad that the movie didn't focus 100% on attacking the character of W, even if it did attempt to belittle him and make him appear foolish.
